At the 8th International Meeting of the Association of Biochemistry Educators, held at Kiawah Island of South Carolina, from April 30th to May 4th, Dr. Bei Zhang did an Educational Scholarship session titled “ Activate Students Learning Outside Classroom”; she also conducted two workshops with other ABE members titled “Linking Clinical Presentations to Their Biochemistry: A Novel ABE Clinical-Biochemistry Curricular Tread Mapping Educational Tool,” and ”Getting to Clerkship and Beyond: Crafting Biochemistry Learning Objectives that Connect and Integrate Basic Science Concepts with Clinical Application.” 

F. Louis Kirk, MD, Teaching Academy Member and Assistant Professor in Anesthesiology, was awarded the Society for Education in Anesthesia SEAd Grant. The Society for Education in Anesthesia provides a $10,000 education research starter grant, open to Faculty members of the Society. The grant is awarded annually. The purpose of the grant is to inspire and assist aspiring faculty who have no previous funding to start an educational research project.

Katie Wells, MD, MPH, Teaching Academy Member and Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine was named as the inaugural Director of Social Medicine in the Office of Medical Education (OME) at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont, effective April 3, 2023.

Anne Dougherty, MD, Teaching Academy Member and Director for Gender Equity and Associate Professor of Obstetrics Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, was recently awarded a New Program grant from the University of Vermont Medical Center for New American Girls on the Rise, a targeted mentorship and enrichment program for middle and high school girls from Chittenden County refugee and immigrant groups.

An article published on PHYS.ORG, titled "Investigating gender equity: Researchers analyze gender distribution of institutional leadership roles," and written and distributed by Elsevier, features comments by Sarah Schlein, MD, UVM associate professor of emergency medicine and Wilderness Medicine Fellowship director. Schlein is a lead investigator on two related studies published in the current issue of the journal Wilderness & Environmental Medicine.

Laura Greene, MD, Teaching Academy Master Teacher, Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and Interim Assistant Dean for Admissions, recently accepted an appointment as program director of the Pathology Residency Program, effective July 1, 2023. She will assume the role from Scott Anderson, MD, professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, who has served as program director since 2009.

Leslie Young, MD,  Teaching Academy Member and Associate Professor of Pediatrics, has been recognized with a Trailblazer Honorable Mention as part of the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) Helping to End Addiction Long-term Initiative, or NIH HEAL Initiative Director’s Awards. 

Teaching Academy Master Teacher, and Associate Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Bei Zhang, MD, PhD, was selected for an ABE (Association of Biochemistry Educators) Distinguished Scholar Award for your submission entitled “Activate Students' Learning Outside Classroom”.

Eight books published by Jones & Bartlett Learning were honored with American Journal of Nursing (AJN) “Book of the Year Awards 2022.” One of the books to receive this award, in the History and Public Policy category, is A History of Public Health: From Past to Present by Jan Carney, MD, MPH, Distinguished Educator and Associate Dean for Public Health and Health Policy.

Eline van den Broek-Altenburg, PhD, Assistant Professor of Radiology and Teaching Academy Member, received one of three 2022 PhRMA Foundation Value Assessment Research Awards for her team’s study abstract, titled “The Effect of Medical Innovation on Cost-Effectiveness of Covid-19 Policies in the U.S.,” at the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR) 2022 conference in June in Washington, D.C.

Kathryn Huggett, PhD received the Distinguished Career Award for Excellence in Teaching and Educational Scholarship from the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE). The Distinguished Career Award for Excellence in Teaching and Educational Scholarship recognizes an IAMSE member who has a distinguished record of educational scholarship, including educational research and dissemination of scholarly approaches to teaching and education. Jay Silveira, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Teaching Academy Master Teacher, is a recipient of a 2022 Kroepsch-Maurice Excellence in Teaching Award.

Sherrie Khadanga, MD, assistant professor of medicine and assistant director of cardiac rehabilitation, and Jennifer Kelly, D.O., associate professor of medicine and associate chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes, both Teaching Academy Members, have been selected to serve as guest editors for Women's Health's upcoming Special Collection on Cardiovascular and Metabolic Bone Health in Aging Women. This special collection will explore best practices, research opportunities, and avenues for improvement in the diagnosis, progression, and management of cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis in aging women.

Kelsey Gleason, ScD, Assistant Professor in the Master of Public Health program and Teaching Academy Member, and Ariana Chiapella, PhD, a research associate with the UVM Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources Ecosystem Science Laboratory, have received one of three 2022-2023 Equity & Justice grants from UVM’s Gund Institute for Environment and the UVM Office of the Provost.
