(AUGUST 1, 2024) Stephen Leffler, M.D.’90, president and chief operating officer of the UVM Medical Center (UVMMC) and professor of emergency medicine at the Larner College of Medicine, told NBC5 that UVMMC and its partners, such as the Howard Center and Pathways Vermont, are proud to offer a new mental health urgent care center that is coming soon to the medical center’s campus in Burlington.
Local health officials said that for too long, the emergency department has become a one-stop shop for all solutions, when in reality, that’s not the case.
“For almost my entire career, they come in and often we couldn't give them exactly what they need to get better,” Leffler said.
The new center will provide services like peer support, crisis assessments, and brief intervention and is fully funded for three years—that means no one will be charged or billed, except when guests who have health insurance coverage receive physical health medical care services.
The clinic is scheduled to open on October 28.
