Leffler Explains Return of UVMMC Mask Mandate in VT Digger Article

(JANUARY 10, 2024) The University of Vermont Medical Center is reviving its mask mandate for staff who work with patients. Stephen Leffler, M.D., president and chief operating officer of the hospital and professor of emergency medicine, says masking is a “simple step that we can take to keep our patients safe,” VT Digger reported.

(JANUARY 10, 2024) In response to rising numbers of respiratory illnesses such as COVID, influenza, and RSV in the region in recent weeks, the University of Vermont Medical Center is reviving its mask mandate for staff who work with patients, VT Digger reports. Stephen Leffler, M.D., president and chief operating officer of the hospital and professor of emergency medicine, says masking is a “simple step that we can take to keep our patients safe.”

Masking remains optional in public areas like hallways, shuttles, and cafeterias; however, patients and visitors with symptoms of respiratory illness are required to wear a mask in all hospital facilities. The hospital also encouraged patients, visitors, and staff to consider masking if they are immunocompromised, are feeling sick, or have been recently exposed to someone with a respiratory illness.

UVMMC had lifted its mask mandate for patients and staff last April as COVID-19 cases waned.
