- Service, Leadership, Research, Honors and Awards: Students are encouraged to maintain a record of service, leadership and research activities performed, and honors and awards received during their medical education in Oasis. Academic history space has been provided as an opportunity for students to build their professional portfolio at all levels of the curriculum. It may be used as a resource for building a CV or other professional documentation. The Office of Medical Student Education will use these records to build Dean’s Letters and write LORs. Significant LCOM awards are read as students cross the stage at Commencement. Instructions are also linked in Oasis. Please contact the Office of Medical Student Education with any questions.
- Proof of Enrollment: "Proof of Enrollment" (often needed for ski passes, discounts on car insurance, etc.) is obtained through the UVM Registrar's Office, via your myUVM portal. Instructions on how to retrieve your "Proof of Enrollment" can be found at the Registrar's Office Enrollment Verifications webpage. Turnover is usually less than one business day! Please contact the UVM Registrar with any questions.
- Need Something Call a "Letter of Good Standing?" (different from proof of enrollment): Submit your request to the Office of Medical Student Education. Please indicate whether you need an electronic format, a hardcopy, or both, and where the letter should be sent.
- "Doctor" Your CV: Want to update your CV to reflect a more medically-inclined candidate? Helpful CV resources, including fun sample templates, are available underCOMET >> Lounge >> Student Affairs >> Residency Application (note, the hyperlink will only work if you are already signed into COMET). The Office of Medical Student Education also has a team of folks that can review CVs and personal statements. LARNER COLLEGE OF MEDICINE POLICY OF THE WEEK
Policy Statement
Early in the Clerkship Year each student is assigned a specific pager. Students accepting pager assignments agree to abide by the terms of this policy as listed below, with the understanding that they are responsible for pagers assigned to them and that the pager is assigned to them for a limited time.
- Pagers are intended for use by the assigned student only and should not be given to other students for their use.
- Students are responsible for returning the pager when they cease to be enrolled at the Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at The University of Vermont. Pagers must be returned prior to graduation. Unneeded pagers can be returned to Office of Medical Student Education (OMSE) at any time.
- Lost, stolen, broken or misused pagers are the responsibility of the assigned student. A replacement fee of $200 for pagers and $5 for sleeves will be automatically billed to the student's account unless otherwise arranged. Students with outstanding or delinquent charges will not receive their diploma upon graduation.
Procedures
When assigned, the Office of Medical Student Education (OMSE) will record identifying pager information in the student's electronic academic history file.
OMSE will ensure that student names and pager numbers are given to appropriate staff at UVMMC. Please note that neither Telecom nor UVMMC Provider Access Service (PAS) will accept pager updates, except in emergency situations.
When a pager is returned to OMSE, the student's electronic academic history file will be updated to reflect this. This electronic notation serves as proof of receipt for the student. Pagers left in the Office without receipt noted will be considered lost and students charged a replacement fee as listed above.

Class of 2017
- Meeting with the Debt Doctor (aka Exit Loan Counseling): Student Financial Services (SFS) is offering small group sessions throughout April to go over many items, including but not limited to learning about loan servicers, what to do during your grace period, how to compare and choose repayment plans, monthly billing examples, potential loan forgiveness options, and more. We highly encourage you to participate in a group session prior to deferring to a one on one meeting, as there is extensive generic information to learn in order for individual questions to be the most productive. - Post-Match residency program paperwork: After Match Day concludes, most students will start receiving paperwork from their programs, part of which will need to be completed by OMSE. Program and state licensure forms can be brought or sent to Emma Faustner for completion. Please include any unique instructions (do the forms need to be sealed, returned to the student, sent directly to the program/board, completed after graduation, etc.). Final transcripts showing the degree conferred and certified copies of the diploma will be available after graduation from the UVM Registrar’s Office.
- 1-yr MBA for MDs: Tulane University School of Medicine working in partnership with the A.B. Freeman School of Business offers several different opportunities for medical students and physicians to gain a graduate business education. The Freeman School is now offering a unique opportunity for medical students to complete an MBA prior to joining a residency program. This one-year program is designed for graduating medical students who were either unsuccessful on Match Day or were looking for an opportunity to complete an MBA in one year prior to going on to a residency program. In case you didn’t know, musculoskeletal injuries are the second most common reason patients seek medical attention. There is a multiple-choice exam on COMET (https://comet.med.uvm.edu; Password: themsk17) under “Assessment of Musculoskeletal Knowledge.” It should take about 10-15 minutes to complete. - APPROACHING DEADLINE - Diversity in Medicine Visiting Student Scholarship: The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University in collaboration with the Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Internal Medicine is sponsoring the Diversity in Medicine Visiting Student Scholarship. The Diversity in Medicine Visiting Student Scholarship is an opportunity for qualified underrepresented (URM) students to participate in clinical electives in the Department of Pediatrics and Department of Internal Medicine. Participants will interact with residents and faculty and will receive mentorship from the members of the Brown Minority Housestaff Association (BMHA). Fourth year medical student in good academic standing at a U.S. accredited medical school. Student must have completed all core clerkships at their home institution. To apply, please fill out the preliminary application and submit to Diversity-Student-Scholarship@Brown.edu. The scholarship award is $1,000.00 for travel, housing and/or personal expenses. - Washington University School of Medicine ODP Visiting Elective Program: The Office of Diversity Programs (ODP) at Washington University School of Medicine adheres to the principle that a rich and diverse learning environment benefits all students. The ODP Visiting Elective Program enhances the exposure of students considering careers in academic medicine to the Washington University Medical Center, while promoting cultural diversity on the medical school campus. Accepted fourth year medical students will receive a stipend of up to $2000 to cover travel, housing and other living expenses. Students who are members of groups underrepresented in medicine or are socioeconomically disadvantaged are strongly encouraged to apply. Applications are accepted until slots are filled for electives typically taking place during the months of July through October.
- Visiting Clerkship Program Reminder- University of Rochester: Three funded visiting clerkship positions are available at the University of Rochester Medical Center from August through November of 2017 for select applicants from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine (URiM) or who have a demonstrated vision and commitment to improving the health status of diverse patient populations via patient care, research and/or teaching. Funding includes up to $1,000 for reimbursement for travel and housing. Each student will be paired with a faculty member that will serve as a mentor and advisor. Each student will be given the opportunity to meet with the Residency Program Director. Each student will be paired with a URM resident and 4th year medical student who will introduce them to the medical center, its resources and the Rochester community. - Medical University of South Carolina - Underrepresented in Medicine Visiting Student Program: We sponsor the MUSC Underrepresented in Medicine Visiting Student Program which provides financial support to 4th-year students attending a U.S. medical school who are from backgrounds that are underrepresented in medicine including Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American/Alaskan Native, and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander. Our program includes a 4-week clinical rotation (elective or externship/sub-I) at MUSC, as well as a stipend to offset the costs of travel and housing in beautiful Charleston, South Carolina. - PRISM Power Hour: “Capturing Clinical Images with Mobile Devices”. April 3, 12-1pm, Davis Auditorium
During this presentation, Angela Boyer, EHR Principal Trainer Senior, PRISM Training & Support, will look at setting up your mobile device with Haiku or Canto, Epic’s mobile applications. The presentation will explore how to use your device to take clinical images in a secure way and import those photos into your patients’ charts and notes. Students who are rotating locally should clear out their lockers by July 1 (when you begin your local rotation, your OASIS Academic History Locker Info will be updated to reflect your new UVMMC Locker info; contact Jacqueline Drouin with any questions about your UVMMC locker). As a reminder, students who fail to clean out their lockers by the established deadline will be charged a $50 cleaning fee, as outlined in the UVM Medical Student Handbook Policy 950.00 – Student Lockers. SURVEY OPPORTUNITY - Technology Use Among Medical Students
We need your help! Larner College of Medicine has been selected as one of five medical schools in the country to pilot a survey about technology use among medical students. This is an extension of a decade-long national study of undergraduate student technology use by the Educause Center for Applied Research. This anonymous survey will not only provide data to help guide the technology program at LCOM, it will be aggregated with data from the other medical schools to provide a national perspective that will be that will be reported at the Educause and Association of American Medical Colleges meetings. This sort of benchmark data is also vital for the accreditation process.
Your opinion is important. Larner College of Medicine was included in this study because of our reputation for technology integration as well as attracting tech-savvy students.
Participation in the survey is completely voluntary, and you can choose to exit the survey at any point. Your responses are anonymous. Please contact Jill Jemison, Director of UVMLCOM Technology Services, with any questions.

If you know of a faculty member who has shown excellence in the classroom, let us know! The Kroepsch-Maurice Committee depends on you to help identify faculty whom you believe qualify for this award. Students, faculty, staff and alumni/ae are urged to forward nominations. You are welcome to submit more than one nomination per category or submit nominations in more than one category.
Each recipient will receive $2,500. Nominations are accepted in the following faculty categories: Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, Lecturer (Including Senior Lecturer and Continuing Education Instructor). Areas to be considered for selection include: Excellence in instruction (including learning experiences outside the traditional classroom), Capacity to animate students and engage them in the pursuit of knowledge and understanding, Innovation in teaching methods and/or curriculum development, Demonstrated commitment to cultural diversity, Ability to motivate and challenge students, and Evidence of excellent advising. Each semester, more than 1000 people attend our Community Medical School lecture series, confirming that the community is more interested than ever in learning about the work of faculty at the UVM Larner College of Medicine and the UVM Medical Center. On Tuesday evening, March 7, Community Medical School begins its Spring series in Carpenter Auditorium at 6:00 pm with a presentation on exploring the science of well-being. The series, which is free and open to the public, will continue this semester on the first Tuesday of the month in April, May and June with lectures on a wide range of current topics in medicine. Kemper Alston, M.D., M.P.H., Professor of Medicine and Division Chief, Infectious Disease will present "Battle of the Bacteria: Antibiotic Resistance and the Evolution of Superbugs." The UVM Political Science Department presents "Dreamland: America's Opiate Epidemic and How We Got Where We Are" with Sam Quinones
April 5, 3:30 PM, in the Grand Maple Ballroom, Davis Center. The Political Science Department is sponsoring a lecture on April 5th by journalist Sam Quinones entitled "Dreamland: America's Opiate Epidemic and How We Got Where We Are." He has recently written a book Dreamland about the opiate crisis that has been nominated for a number of important awards. Sam Quinones is a journalist from Los Angeles. He was a reporter for the Los Angeles Times from 2004-2014. He has written three nonfiction books including True Tales from Another Mexico and Antonio’s Gun and Delfina’s Dream. His most recent book Dreamland is about the opiate crisis in the United States. It has been selected for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Dreamland brings together three important stories to explain the opiate epidemic: the pharmaceutical industry’s aggressive marketing of opiates, the collapse of the middle class in the rust belt, and the emergence of decentralized distribution networks of Mexican heroin dealers.

I am contacting you on behalf of thirdspace, the creative literary and arts journal run by Harvard Medical Students. Our hope is to capture perspectives on medical education throughout the ages, one contemporary piece at a time. We want to extend our invitation for submissions about the challenges, rewards, and peculiarities of medical education to the students and faculty at your medical school.
Our journal publishes creative pieces (i.e. fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and visual arts) from any authors. We accept submissions throughout the year on a "rolling basis," which means authors can submit their work to thirdspace at any time.
