- THIS WEEK - COMIS Administrator Announcement: COM Technology Services is changing the systems maintenance schedule to better respond to security and vulnerability threats. Instead of quarterly weekend maintenance windows, we will move to shorter, monthly work periods. Starting in February, updates to systems will occur on the third Tuesday of each month from 10PM and 6AM. During that time, services may be briefly interrupted as systems are restarted or modified. We will notify the community if an extended outage is needed or email and internet services are interrupted. COMET maintenance will remain 10 p.m. to midnight every Tuesday. The new schedule will begin immediately. The dates for 2017 are: Feb. 21, March 21, April 18, May 16, June 20, July 18, August 15, September 19, October 17, November 21 and December 19. LARNER COLLEGE OF MEDICINE POLICY OF THE WEEK
Policy Statement
Travel to clinical sites is a requirement of the LCOM curriculum.
All students must have a valid United States driver's license and have access to a car to meet this requirement. Students completing clerkships at St. Mary's Hospital will be operating a UVM-owned vehicle and must pass the UVM Drivers Safety Course prior to doing so.
The Office of Student Medical Education will purchase one roundtrip airline ticket from Burlington, Vermont to West Palm Beach, Florida for clerkship students completing a clerkship rotation in West Palm Beach. No compensation will be given to students who decline the roundtrip flight for alternate travel arrangement.
Policy Elaboration
In adherence with the University's Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Use Policy, students at St. Mary's Medical Center must follow all rules and regulations presented during the UVM Risk Management Driver's Safety Program. In addition to those rules, the following Larner College of Medicine regulations apply:
- UVM vehicles are to be used for local driving only.
- Each apartment in West Palm Beach (WPB) is assigned a vehicle. This vehicle must be left in the garage of the unit with a full tank of gas when departing WPB at the end of the clerkship/rotation. Keys must be left in the designated container on the kitchen counter when leaving. Students are responsible for the cost of replacing lost car keys.
- Traveling to and from St. Mary's takes priority over other local errands.
- While in WPB there are a limited number of vehicles for the entire group of students who are completing their clerkships during the rotations, as well as occasional Advanced Integration level students. One car will be housed at each unit, but all approved drivers are able to operate any of the UVM cars. It is the responsibility of the group to figure out a schedule to use the vehicle to get each other to and from the hospital/offices. Each unit has a garage, but vehicles may also be left in the parking lot if another student needs to drive it. (This will prevent the student form needing a key to another unit.)
- It is the responsibility of the students sharing the vehicle to determine a method for fueling the vehicle. UVM is not responsible for the cost of fuel.
- If the vehicle is involved in an accident or receives a ticket, the student driver must notify the Associate Dean for Clinical Education within the first 24 hours following the incident.
- Only approved UVM drivers are allowed to drive the vehicles. If an individual who is not approved is found to be operating a vehicle, this will be considered a professionalism issue and appropriate action will be taken.

- DEADLINE THIS WEEK - Submit Nominations for co2017 Class-Selected Awards: Each student graduating in May 2017 should have received an invite to participate in a LimeSurvey; this allows each member of the class to submit nominations for class-selected awards, which will be presented at the May 15th Honor's Night. You have until 8 AM, on Monday, March 20 to complete the Survey. There will be another survey compiling all nominations for final selection going out soon. Thank you for your input! - DEADLINE THIS WEEK - CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS - Class of 2017 Graduation Student Speaker: With Match Week and Commencement in our sights, it is time to start planning for the important selection of the Class of 2017 student graduation speaker. If you are interested in being considered for this role, please submit your speech (5-7 minutes in length) to Kiersten Hallquist no later than Monday, March 20th, at 10:00am. All submissions will be reviewed by a selection Committee and the student will be notified of the selection results no later than April 19th. Please contact Kiersten Hallquist with any questions.
- Meeting with the Debt Doctor (aka Exit Loan Counseling): Student Financial Services (SFS) is offering small group sessions throughout April to go over many items, including but not limited to learning about loan servicers, what to do during your grace period, how to compare and choose repayment plans, monthly billing examples, potential loan forgiveness options, and more. We highly encourage you to participate in a group session prior to deferring to a one on one meeting, as there is extensive generic information to learn in order for individual questions to be the most productive. - Post-Match residency program paperwork: After Match Day concludes, most students will start receiving paperwork from their programs, part of which will need to be completed by OMSE. Program and state licensure forms can be brought or sent to Emma Faustner for completion. Please include any unique instructions (do the forms need to be sealed, returned to the student, sent directly to the program/board, completed after graduation, etc.). Final transcripts showing the degree conferred and certified copies of the diploma will be available after graduation from the UVM Registrar’s Office.
- 1-yr MBA for MDs: Tulane University School of Medicine working in partnership with the A.B. Freeman School of Business offers several different opportunities for medical students and physicians to gain a graduate business education. The Freeman School is now offering a unique opportunity for medical students to complete an MBA prior to joining a residency program. This one-year program is designed for graduating medical students who were either unsuccessful on Match Day or were looking for an opportunity to complete an MBA in one year prior to going on to a residency program. This externship was established for the purpose of exposing medical students to the discipline of radiation oncology and provides up to two students each year with the opportunity to spend six weeks in our Department working on a research project and participating in clinical and educational activities. You must be a first or second year student in good standing in an accredited U.S. Medical School in order to be considered for this externship. The start and end dates will be determined with the students after the selection process, but must occur between June and August. - APPROACHING DEADLINE - University of Iowa Jackson Steindler Orthopaedic Clerkship 2017 - application due April 1: The University of Iowa Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for the Jackson-Steindler Orthopedic Clerkship. Beginning in Spring 2017, one or two outstanding medical students who have successfully completed the third year of medical school at a LCME-accredited institution and who have an interest in orthopedics will be selected for this award. - Diversity in Medicine Visiting Student Scholarship: The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University in collaboration with the Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Internal Medicine is sponsoring the Diversity in Medicine Visiting Student Scholarship. The Diversity in Medicine Visiting Student Scholarship is an opportunity for qualified underrepresented (URM) students to participate in clinical electives in the Department of Pediatrics and Department of Internal Medicine. Participants will interact with residents and faculty and will receive mentorship from the members of the Brown Minority Housestaff Association (BMHA). Fourth year medical student in good academic standing at a U.S. accredited medical school. Student must have completed all core clerkships at their home institution. To apply, please fill out the preliminary application and submit to Diversity-Student-Scholarship@Brown.edu. The scholarship award is $1,000.00 for travel, housing and/or personal expenses. - Visiting Externship in Internal Medicine for URM Students Sidney Kimmel Medical College Philadelphia PA: This rotation provides an opportunity for underrepresented minority students to have a month-long clinical experience in the Department of Medicine at Jefferson where they can get to know the institution, department, and residency program. - APPROACHING DEADLINE - Freeman Foundation Legacy Scholarship Opportunity: The Larner College of Medicine is pleased to announce that applications are being accepted for the Freeman Foundation Legacy Medical Scholarship for at least four members of the Class of 2019 to be awarded at least $5,000 in the current 2016-2017 academic year (amount may vary based on number of applicants). Applicants should have a passion for, and commitment to, meeting the health care needs of Vermonters post-residency. The deadline to apply is Monday, March 27th, 2017. - DEADLINE THIS WEEK - Arnold P. Gold Foundation Student Summer Fellowship: The Student Summer Fellowship program offers opportunities for medical students to complete a domestic or international research or service project related to community health. Projects must be focused on studying cultural competency issues, developing skills to become relationship-centered physicians, and addressing a public health need in an under-served community or population. The Fellowship award includes a stipend of up to $4,000 for a 10-week project. Medical students at accredited U.S. or Canadian schools of allopathy or osteopathy may apply for either the Research or Service Fellowships. THIS WEEK - Lunching with Leadership Session
Tuesday, March 21, 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM, in the Given Courtyard S359 Conference Room. Join representatives from each of the student leadership groups (Student Council, Wellness, OSR, SEG, DACDI and the Curriculum Committee) for the first Lunching with the Leadership session. The purpose of this lunch is to promote bidirectional communication between students and student leadership groups. As you enjoy a catered lunch, you will get an update on current projects being addressed by the various student groups. You will also have a chance to ask questions and share feedback about LCOM activities and your medical education. We will use your concerns and suggestions to drive the agenda at the next Executive Board Meeting between student representatives and LCOM deans. Share your concerns, identify problems, and suggest solutions that you may have regarding your medical education or your experience at LCOM.

Join members of the Committee on Student Financial Assistance as they preview their new resource that aims to demystify the financial aid process for student diversity officers and others in the student affairs community. Please mark your calendars for “An Introduction to COSFA’s Financial Aid Resource for Student Diversity Officers” webinar that is scheduled for Thursday, March 30th at 2:00 p.m. EST. This webinar will highlight key topics covered in the resource, including information on the role of the financial aid officer, a standard aid application timeline, an overview of student loan repayment plans, information on determining Cost of Attendance and the latest on average debt levels. DEADLINE THIS WEEK - 10th Annual Residency Showcase at Northwestern -- Travel Stipends Available
In partnership with the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University, the GME sponsor at Northwestern, will offer its 10th annual Residency Showcase on Saturday, 29 April 2017. The primary goal of this program is to diversify the applicant pools in our residency programs. Thus, we are particularly interested in attracting students with diverse backgrounds to attend. Our objective is to diversify in a very holistic sense including, but not limited to: gender, race, ethnicity, language skills, life experience, sexual orientation, religion. The patient population in our hospitals is extremely diverse and in order to continue to provide excellent care and training we recognize the need for a diverse cohort of trainees.
The McGaw Diversity Council is again offering a limited number of stipends up to $500 for prospective residents to attend the Showcase. These stipends are intended to defray travel expenses to and from Chicago for students McGaw has defined as underrepresented (see website for program-specific criteria). THIS WEEK - New Research Emphasis Begins!
Beginning March 20th, in the evening, a new Research Emphasis will be offered to Medical Students. This optional Emphasis will be offered jointly to Doctor of Nursing Practice and Doctor of Medicine students. It will include several components including a 2-year monthly curriculum, quarterly journal clubs, opportunities to participate in "real-life" aspects of research (e.g. observe the process of clinical trial design), and resources for finding research projects and mentoring throughout the University. The 2-year curriculum will include workshops, hand-on sessions, and seminars on clinical, translational, and basic science research topics to improve your research knowledge and skills. THIS WEEK- New England Science Symposium
Saturday, March 25, 2017, at the Joseph B. Martin Conference Center at Harvard Medical School, 77 Avenue Louis Pasteur, Boston, Massachusetts. The New England Science Symposium (NESS), established in 2002, promotes careers in biomedical sciences. NESS provides a forum for postdocs (research and clinical); medical, dental and graduate students; post-baccalaureates; college and community college students to share their biomedical and health-related research activities through oral or poster presentations, to engage in discussions related to career development in the sciences, to exchange ideas and to expand their professional networks. TMS is a Navy Reserve (SELRES DCO) program designed to provide financial and other incentives for professionals while in select Medical and Dental residency and fellowship programs. DEADLINE THIS WEEK - Arnold P. Gold Foundation Hope Babette Tang Humanism in Healthcare Essay Contest
The 2017 Hope Babette Tang Humanism in Healthcare Essay Contest encourages medical students to engage in a reflective writing exercise around a prompt or quote related to humanism in medicine. Winning essays are published in Academic Medicine, the official journal of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and are eligible to win up to $1,000.
This year, students are asked to reflect on the following quote and respond to the writing prompt with an original essay of 1,000 words or less: "Compassion becomes real when we recognize our shared humanity." (Pema Chodron) Using the quote as a reflective prompt, write an essay based on a true story or anecdote that illustrates an experience where you or a team member worked to ensure that humanism (compassionate, collaborative, scientifically excellent care) was at the core of medical practice. Deadline for submission: March 24, 2017.
APPROACHING DEADLINE - Haiku Contest - due April Fool's 2017 - thirdspace @ Harvard Medical School
I am contacting you on behalf of thirdspace, the creative literary and arts journal run by Harvard Medical Students. Our hope is to capture perspectives on medical education throughout the ages, one contemporary piece at a time. We want to extend our invitation for submissions about the challenges, rewards, and peculiarities of medical education to the students and faculty at your medical school.
Our journal publishes creative pieces (i.e. fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and visual arts) from any authors. We accept submissions throughout the year on a "rolling basis," which means authors can submit their work to thirdspace at any time.
Upcoming Contest: We also run yearly contests, including our First Poetry - Haiku Contest that ends April 1, 2017. Details for the contest can be found here: http://www.thirdspacejournal.org.

in-Training, the online magazine for medical students, is looking for medical students of all class years to submit articles and essays about their experiences in medicine for peer-edited online publication. We are also accepting applications for medical student editors, a managing editor, social media managers, and graphic designers.
For potential writers: With an emphasis on humanism in medicine, in-Training is run entirely by medical students and serves as an outlet for budding physician-journalists and writers at all medical schools around the globe. We seek articles on any topic relevant to the medical student community, including reflections, opinions, policy, research, poetry and art.
