THIS WEEK - AMA invitation for students

Fear of being judged by their clinician keeps many patients from seeking care. This is especially true for patients with obesity or mental illness. Sign up now to join the AMA Journal of Ethics discussion forum for an in-depth conversation with students and faculty from around the country about the stigma that such patients may face.

  • Weight stigma in health care: March 8–15
Studies show that physicians treat patients who are not obese with greater care and empathy, yet fail to refer patients with obesity for necessary diagnostic tests. Are students and clinicians biased against patients with obesity?
  • Stigma towards patients with mental illness: March 15–22
People with mental illness experience higher mortality rates and are generally in poorer health than others in the general population. Do clinicians contribute to these disparities by stigmatizing patients with mental illness?

Register for the discussion forum: If you haven’t registered for the forum, you can register now, online (Use your school-affiliated email address to create an account or log in to your existing AMA account). Please contact Dean Katie Huggett with any questions.

What is the AMA Journal of Ethics discussion forum? Our school is part of a consortium partnering with the AMA Journal of Ethics to host a series of online discussions to explore topics of ethical import and interest to students. Medical schools in the consortium include Harvard University, Medical College of Wisconsin, New York University, Northwestern University, UCLA, University of Colorado, University of Vermont and University of Washington.
