  • UVM Campus Recreation - Old CATcards Deactivated: Accounts connected to Old CATCards are being deactivated. If you have not yet been issued your NEW CATCard, you will need to obtain it by Friday, March 10 in order to continue accessing Campus Recreation facilities. This includes people who are registered for biometrics (finger scan). In order to continue facility access, please visit the CATCard office prior to your next facility visit. The CATcard office is open Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm and is located in Billings B-150. Access will not be granted after March 10 until the NEW CATCard has been obtained.   • Gender-Inclusive Restrooms: The Gender-Inclusive Task Force @ UVM published their findings and recommendations and have informed progress and plans for the campus, including a map of gender-inclusive bathrooms on campus.   • Webinar on Taxes: Tax time arrives every year and it often comes with different laws—as well as different financial situations to consider. To help you prepare, the AAMC is offering a webinar on Taxes on March 16, 2017 at 3 PM EST. This webinar will help you prepare for tax season and identify salient tax related information that a student (or soon to be graduate) should know.   • UVM Housing & Meal Plan Options (more info added): OMSE was asked to investigate UVM housing and meal plan options for medical students. This information is both available at UVM Res Life and UVM Dining Services. Students can sign up for a meal plan and on campus housing would depend upon availability after all required students are housed and their ability to sign a 9 month contract.  However there is also off-campus, affiliate housing available to graduate students.  Please feel free to refer students to Residential Life or UVM Dining Services if they have questions. UVM Dining Services actually has a specific page for Medical & Graduate Meal Plans. UVM Res Life has information regarding Off-Campus Housing – Affiliate Housing and how to get housing.  For more information you can view the UVM Res Life Housing and Meal Plan Contract Terms & Conditions. Another valuable resource is the Office of Student and Community Relations (http://www.uvm.edu/oscr/). In addition to providing a listing of off-campus rentals, OSCR has great information and advice about housing in the Burlington area. Policy 570.10 - Holidays and Vacations: Foundations

Policy Statement

Students will be excused for major holidays of religions they observe.  During Foundations, they will need to work with the course director and course coordinator to make up any missed requirements.

  1. All University Administrative holidays will be observed, with no classes or other activities scheduled:
    1. Independence Day
    2. Labor Day
    3. Thanksgiving
    4. Christmas Holiday
    5. New Year's Holiday
    6. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
    7. President's Day
    8. Memorial Day
  2. Vacation periods will be observed as follows:
    1. Noon the Wednesday before Thanksgiving until the following Monday morning
    2. Two weeks including the Christmas and New Year's Holidays
    3. One week in March and/or April
    4. Eight weeks following the first year of medical school
  3. Leaves of absence are not covered by this policy statement. Students seeking such leave should review the Leave of Absence policy, and must consult with the Associate Dean for Students. Taking a Leave of Absence could delay a student’s graduation date.

  • Please Take A few Moments to assess your Musculoskeletal Knowledge: Dr. McCarthy needs your help to assess your musculoskeletal knowledge! In case you didn’t know, musculoskeletal injuries are the second most common reason patients seek medical attention. There is a multiple-choice exam on COMET (https://comet.med.uvm.edu; Password: themsk17) under “Assessment of Musculoskeletal Knowledge.” It should take about 10-15 minutes to complete. This research will help you see where your knowledge lies, and will help us to refine the musculoskeletal curriculum at UVM to benefit future classes. Thank you!   • End of the Year Banquet Video Call for Talent/Funzies: Hi Fourth Years! Andy Liu and Mohammad Mertaban are going to be coordinating a video for the End of the Year Banquet (formerly known as the Osler Banquet). We are giving it a new name this year because previously there was a notion that this banquet was only for 4th years when, in reality, it is a celebration for the entire school. Thus, we are going to be making our own video for our own class. If you would like to help create, act, plan, this video, please email mohammad.mertaban@med.uvm.edu and chi-anh.liu@med.uvm.edu.   • Freeman Foundation Legacy Scholarship Opportunity: The Larner College of Medicine is pleased to announce that applications are being accepted for the Freeman Foundation Legacy Medical Scholarship for at least four members of the Class of 2019 to be awarded at least $5,000 in the current 2016-2017 academic year (amount may vary based on number of applicants).   • Arnold P. Gold Foundation Student Summer Fellowship: The Student Summer Fellowship program offers opportunities for medical students to complete a domestic or international research or service project related to community health. Projects must be focused on studying cultural competency issues, developing skills to become relationship-centered physicians, and addressing a public health need in an under-served community or population. The Fellowship award includes a stipend of up to $4,000 for a 10-week project. Medical students at accredited U.S. or Canadian schools of allopathy or osteopathy may apply for either the Research or Service Fellowships. THIS WEEK - Community Medical School Begins on March 7, with "Happiness: Exploring the Science of Well-Being"

Each semester, more than 1000 people attend our Community Medical School lecture series, confirming that the community is more interested than ever in learning about the work of faculty at the UVM Larner College of Medicine and the UVM Medical Center. On Tuesday evening, March 7, Community Medical School begins its Spring series in Carpenter Auditorium at 6:00 pm with a presentation on exploring the science of well-being. The series, which is free and open to the public, will continue this semester on the first Tuesday of the month in April, May and June with lectures on a wide range of current topics in medicine. On Tuesday, March 07, 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM, in Carpenter Auditorium, Andrew Rosenfeld, M.D., Assistant Professor of Psychiatry will present "Happiness: Exploring the Science of Well-Being." Can money buy happiness and do we have the ability to change our minds? Learn about the history of positive psychology, the brain's ability to reorganize itself, and the science behind relationships and happiness.

  • UP NEXT - "Battle of the Bacteria: Antibiotic Resistance and the Evolution of Superbugs" with W. Kemper Alston, M.D., M.P.H., Professor of Medicine and Division Chief, Infectious Disease (April 04) - Explore a brief history of antibiotics and the mechanisms that lead to antibiotic resistance. Gain an understanding of "superbugs" - the bacteria that are resistant to many common antibiotics - what they are, how they evolved, and what we need to do to slow their spread.

 Tuesday, March 07, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM, in the Sullivan Classroom (Med Ed 200). Interested in running in the Vermont City Marathon with the UVM COM marathon team? Wondering about who we will be fundraising for? Come join us for a patient panel on Tuesday, March 7th to hear directly from former and current patients about Steps to Wellness, the local non-profit that will be the recipient of our fundraising.  Steps to Wellness is an oncology rehabilitation program that provides free physical therapy, personal training, and social support to recovering cancer patients who received treatment at the UVM Medical Center. This unique organization improves patient outcomes and quality of life, and the UVM COM marathon team contributions in previous years have helped sustain the program, in part by funding the trainers that work there. The 2-year curriculum will include workshops, hand-on sessions, and seminars on clinical, translational, and basic science research topics to improve your research knowledge and skills. 10th Annual Residency Showcase at Northwestern -- Travel Stipends Available

In partnership with the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University, the GME sponsor at Northwestern, will offer its 10th annual Residency Showcase on Saturday, 29 April 2017.  The primary goal of this program is to diversify the applicant pools in our residency programs.  Thus, we are particularly interested in attracting students with diverse backgrounds to attend.   Our objective is to diversify in a very holistic sense including, but not limited to:  gender, race, ethnicity, language skills, life experience, sexual orientation, religion.  The patient population in our hospitals is extremely diverse and in order to continue to provide excellent care and training we recognize the need for a diverse cohort of trainees.

The McGaw Diversity Council is again offering a limited number of stipends up to $500 for prospective residents to attend the Showcase.  These stipends are intended to defray travel expenses to and from Chicago for students McGaw has defined as underrepresented (see website for program-specific criteria).  Please help us spread the word to your medical students who will be graduating in 2018.  Applications for the stipends are to be submitted online and are due no later than 20 March 2017. Haiku Contest - due April Fool's 2017 - thirdspace @ Harvard Medical School

I am contacting you on behalf of thirdspace, the creative literary and arts journal run by Harvard Medical Students. Our hope is to capture perspectives on medical education throughout the ages, one contemporary piece at a time. We want to extend our invitation for submissions about the challenges, rewards, and peculiarities of medical education to the students and faculty at your medical school.
 
Our journal publishes creative pieces (i.e. fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and visual arts) from any authors. We accept submissions throughout the year on a "rolling basis," which means authors can submit their work to thirdspace at any time.
 
Upcoming Contest: We also run yearly contests, including our First Poetry - Haiku Contest that ends April 1, 2017. Details for the contest can be found here: http://www.thirdspacejournal.org.

Arnold P. Gold Foundation Hope Babette Tang Humanism in Healthcare Essay Contest

The 2017 Hope Babette Tang Humanism in Healthcare Essay Contest encourages medical students to engage in a reflective writing exercise around a prompt or quote related to humanism in medicine. Winning essays are published in Academic Medicine, the official journal of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and are eligible to win up to $1,000.

This year, students are asked to reflect on the following quote and respond to the writing prompt with an original essay of 1,000 words or less: "Compassion becomes real when we recognize our shared humanity." (Pema Chodron) Using the quote as a reflective prompt, write an essay based on a true story or anecdote that illustrates an experience where you or a team member worked to ensure that humanism (compassionate, collaborative, scientifically excellent care) was at the core of medical practice. Deadline for submission: March 24, 2017.

2017 Stanley M. Kaplan Essay Award for Medical Students

Entries may include topical essays, case reports, review articles, or original research that was conducted in medical school for which the student was first author (first author essays must have been published within the past 12 months of date of current submission).  Entries will be judged on creativity, knowledge of psychiatry, style, and contribution to understanding important problems in any of the biological, psychological, or social dimensions of psychiatry. The winner will receive a cash prize of $500 and two runners-up will be awarded $250 each. Winners will be announced in October, 2017. The submission deadline is JUNE 30, 2017. Read more...
