The Department of Family Medicine is an academic and clinical department with an evidence-oriented mission that includes clinical care across the family spectrum, community engagement, clinically relevant research and scholarship, and outstanding education for medical students, residents, and providers across Vermont.



The University and The University of Vermont Medical Center's Family Medicine Health Care Service support the only such residency program in Vermont, working with six residents per year in a three-year training program. Read more

    • October 1, 2016 - David Little, MD retired after 41 years in our department!  In honor of Dr. Little, the reception area at Family Medicine - Milton was named The David N. Little, MD Family & Community Room on October 6, 2016.
    • July 14 2016 - Robert Gramling, MD recently led a study published in JAMA Oncology that addresses Doctor-Patient Miscommunication.   
    • June 10 2016 - Robert Gramling, MD was inaugurated as the Holly and Bob Miller Chair in Palliative Medicine. Family Medicine welcomes and congratulates him on this prestigious honor!
    • May 20 2016 - Candace Fraser, MD  was awarded the 2015 Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award. This award is presented to the student and faculty member who best demonstrate the Foundation's ideals of outstanding compassion in the delivery of care, respect for patients, their families, and healthcare colleagues, as well as demonstrated clinical excellence!
