(OCTOBER 7, 2024) John Hughes, M.D., professor emeritus of psychiatry and psychological science, who passed away in March 2024, was quoted in a Vaping Vibes story on the effectiveness of vaping vs. other nicotine replacement therapies (NRTs).
Nicotine addiction is common, difficult to treat, and fatal. Nicotine replacement therapies still contain the addictive element, but in lesser amounts. With so much of the discourse centering around nicotine in tobacco, little attention is paid to the other harmful chemicals. There are over 7,000 chemicals in tobacco smoke, including at least 70 known carcinogens.
“The major harm from smoking is not caused by nicotine. The cancer and heart disease associated with smoking come from the carcinogens and the carbon monoxide in cigarettes,” Hughes said.
