(JUNE 23, 2023) Professor Emeritus of Medicine Arthur Kunin, M.D.’52, and fellow Larner alum Ned MacCarty, M.D.’57, commented in a WVNY-TV story about an Alzheimer’s fundraiser held at The Residence at Quarry Hill, where they both live.

(JUNE 23, 2023) Professor Emeritus of Medicine Arthur Kunin, M.D.’52, and fellow Larner alum Denton Edward “Ned” MacCarty, M.D.’57, commented in a WVNY-TV story about a fundraiser held at The Residence at Quarry Hill, a South Burlington senior living and memory care community where they both live, to raise money for the Vermont chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.

The annual event is part of a national initiative held near the summer solstice every June called Longest Day for Alzheimer’s. “For those who suffer with dementia, it’s the longest day that they have to go through this disease process,” Quarry Hill memory care director Tanya Seeley said.

Kunin, the Green Mountain State’s lone First Gentleman to date, was married to Madeleine Kunin for more than 35 years, including all three terms that she served as governor of Vermont from 1985 to 1991. “It is unbelievably tragic for the families that have a member developing Alzheimer’s disease,” he said. “And, I might say, it’s also very tragic for the physician who sees how important these people were and aren’t anymore.”

MacCarty’s wife, Jackie, died in 2022 at Quarry Hill after a lengthy battle with dementia. “I’ve been a resident for about three and a half years,” he said. “Very, very happy with their care for my wife. Fortunately, I haven’t required their care — but I may yet, and they do a wonderful job.”
