About Camp Research & Recreation (Camp R & R):

During the summer of 2013, The University of Vermont in collaboration with Yale University hosted the inaugural Camp Research and Recreation (Camp R & R) at Camp Hochelaga in South Hero, VT. Camp R & R is a program which combines research and recreation, and over the course of two weeks in August, roughly 80 campers enjoyed:

  • Swimming
  • Kayaking
  • Archery
  • Art Class
  • Theatre Class
  • Live musical performances by local artists
  • Tai Chi
  • Sports
  • Locally grown food

Within the context of this enriching day camp experience, our campers also spent a portion of each day meeting one-on-one with a staff member who collected various research measures, including:

  • WISC Information Subtest
  • WISC Block Subtest
  • Attention Network Task
  • Balloon Analogue Risk Task
  • UCLA Trauma Self-Report
  • UCLA PTSD Reaction Index
  • ASEBA: Youth Self-Report
  • Personal Experiences Inventory
  • Food Frequency Questionnaire
  • ASSI-R: Arizona Social Support Interview Schedule
  • Self-Ratings of Pubertal Development
  • NIH PROMIS: Depression, Anxiety, Anger
  • Edinburgh Handedness Inventory
  • RNA & DNA collection
  • EEG

The primary aim of Camp R & R is to learn from our campers about the ways in which risk and resilience operate in the lives of children and families. We also hope that Camp R & R provides each of our campers with a fun and positive experience (and perhaps a little R & R in the form of Rest and Relaxation). Our inaugural camp served as a wonderful beginning to a project we hope to see continue for many years.
