(OCTOBER 16, 2023) Radiation oncologist Nataniel Lester-Coll, M.D., assistant professor of radiation oncology at the University of Vermont Medical Center, commented to Renal & Urology News about a study of stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) as a treatment for prostate cancer.

SBRT should be considered a new standard of care for low-and favorable-intermediate-risk prostate cancer, investigators concluded based on findings from the international phase 3 PACE-B trial presented at the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) 2023 Annual Meeting in San Diego.

Lester-Coll said the excellent outcomes observed in PACE-B reflect advances in patient immobilization, treatment planning, and image-guidance. “It’s a very important study in that the stereotactic option offers convenience and cost-effectiveness, providing patients with shorter, more accessible treatment while optimizing health care resources,” he said.
