Division of Dentistry, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Our division members include practitioners in the areas of general practice, oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontics, endodontics, pedodontics, orthodontics, orofacial pain and prosthodontics. Members of our division have contributed to their professions in leadership positions in their specialty areas including the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the American Academy of Orofacial Pain and the American Association of Periodontics. Currently the division has five board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons: Paul A. Danielson, DMD, Thomas W. Connolly, DMD, Paul G. Boerman, DDS, Albert Hardy, DMD, and William Purdy, DDS. These surgeons, in addition to treatment of dental pathology, participate in facial fracture management, treatment of developmental deformities of the jaws, infection of the maxillofacial region, pathology of the maxillofacial region and temporomandibular joint disorders. Oral and maxillofacial surgery, pedodontics and orthodontics also participate in the Children with Special Needs program for children with cleft palate and orofacial deformities.
The University of Vermont Medical Center is the sponsoring organization of a one year, fully accredited, general practice residency in dentistry. The program has recently expanded to four residents per year and is managed by a full-time program director, Dr. Janet T. Miccolo.
The main general dental clinical exposure for the program is at the Burlington Community Health Center. In addition there are clinical rotations in oral and maxillofacial surgery, anesthesia, the emergency department and a rural rotation at the Plainfield Health Center.
Approximately one third of the graduate dentists completing this program choose to practice in the state of Vermont. Many residents of this program choose to continue their education in specialty training.
The division is also a contributor to the education of residents in otolaryngology and other services involved with the management of facial fractures.
