November 2009
Colleagues,
On October 14, 2009 the National Institutes of Health received our new 758-page Clinical and Translational Science Award application. We are hopeful that this application, weighing in at 7.95 pounds, will result in a highly favorable return on investment - $2,680,123 per pound!
In our last application we added an entirely new section entitled “Translational Research in Health Policy”. This addition extended and completed the chain of translational research which now runs from the bench to the bedside (T1), through clinical research from the bedside to the community (T2), and from the community to health policy (T3). In the current application, we further strengthened this T3 section by affiliating with the faculty and staff at the Muskie School of Public Service. We also reported that we have enrolled 5 people in the PhD program, 2 people in the MS program and 1 person in the Certificate program in CCTS Education and Career Development.
Literally hundreds of people gave of their time, effort and expertise to update and reassemble this gigantic application. I thank you one and all for your continued enthusiasm and stamina as we assembled this our fourth, and I ferverently hope, final application for a CTSA.
We will await the review process and expect to hear some indication of how our application was received by May 2010. Until then, we will continue to build and operate the Center for Clinical and Translational Science to the best of our abilities pending the arrival of NIH funding.
