Pilot Project LOIs Propose Cancer-Related Studies

In its first year of accepting grant requests, the Pilot Project Program of the Northern New England Clinical & Translational Research Network received nearly 60 Letters of Intent (LOIs) for potential study funding.  A handful in each of the first two rounds highlighted cancer-related aims. Due to limited funding, only the most fully-developed programs were approved, while others were encouraged to further develop and resubmit in future rounds.

  • Leveraging machine-learning applications to automate detection and classification of breast cancer metastases in whole-slide images of histological lymph node sections
  • Alterations to the hemostatic balance and resultant clot stability in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy
  • Refine and test the convenience, efficiency and cost-effectiveness of an ultrasound-guided mobile breast cancer diagnostics tool
  • Effect of anti-inflammatory treatment on local immune response triggered by breast tumor biopsy
  • Influence of place of residence and other sociodemographic factors on surgical access to high volume hospitals among Maine cancer patients
  • Study the knowledge, attitudes and practices of complementary healthcare within the context of cancer screening and prevention
  • Discovering the potential of tsRNA as breast cancer biomarkers and therapeutic targets
  • A Double-Blinded, Placebo-Controlled Crossover Study of Cannabidiol for Chemotherapy Induced Peripheral Neuropathy
