More than 250 University of Vermont Medical Center staff members, Larner College of Medicine students and leaders gathered June 5 at 1 p.m. for a silent demonstration of support for racial justice in honor of George Floyd and others who have died due to racism and police brutality.

A team of faculty members in the Department of Neurological Sciences has been transforming their popular hands-on summer Human Gross Anatomy course into a comprehensive, inclusive online curriculum featuring pre-recorded lectures, gross anatomy lab dissection videos, a 3D anatomy app, and live online discussions.

On May 29, 2020, Dean Richard L. Page, M.D., announced the names of the recipients of the inaugural Dean’s Awards for Professionalism. Jennifer Gilwee, M.D., assistant professor of medicine and chief of of the Division of Internal Medicine, received the Faculty Award for Professionalism. Eric Gagnon, director of facilities administration and projects, received the Staff Award for Professionalism. Isaac de la Bruere, medical student in the Class of 2022, received the Student Award for Professionalism.

Kurti, Ph.D., and Stephen Higgins, Ph.D., discuss how to manage the natural urge to socialize, how to understand our reactions and feelings, and how to establish new, healthy routines to help us cope with our “new normal” and help keep our communities safe.

“Today we send you out into a world that needs you,” said Larner College of Medicine Dean Richard L. Page, M.D., as he welcomed new physicians in the Class of 2020 on Sunday, May 17, during the only live online commencement ceremony held at a medical school during the coronavirus pandemic.

On May 11, awardees from the Larner College of Medicine Class of 2020, faculty and staff were recognized through an online Honors Celebration featuring remarks from Dean Page and videotaped presentations of each award.

Larner College of Medicine faculty members Gregory Holmes, M.D., professor and chair of neurological sciences, and Gary Stein, Ph.D., Perelman professor and chair of biochemistry, have been selected as University Scholars for the 2020-21 academic year.

Class of 2002 UVM alumnus Ben Katz is a detective in the Vermont State Police’s major crimes unit whose work to investigate homicides, process crime scenes and interview witnesses has changed in the world of COVID-19. His wife, Megan Malgeri, a Class of 2012 alumna of the Larner College of Medicine and family medicine specialist, now sees most of her patients via telehealth visits. They are working to safely balance their roles as professionals and parents of two young children during the pandemic.

The American Academy of Arts & Sciences has announced the election of University of Vermont Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics Emerita Susan Wallace, Ph.D., to its membership, in recognition of her status as a world leader in the sciences. Wallace joins 275 new members elected on April 23, 2020.

UVM Professor Harold Dauerman, M.D., and other representatives of the American College of Cardiology, American College of Emergency Physicians and Society of Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions, issued guidlines to help clinicians make decisions about treatment alternatives for heart attack patients in the environment of the novel coronavirus pandemic.
