Department of Neurological Sciences

A team of faculty members in the Department of Neurological Sciences has been transforming their popular hands-on summer Human Gross Anatomy course into a comprehensive, inclusive online curriculum featuring pre-recorded lectures, gross anatomy lab dissection videos, a 3D anatomy app, and live online discussions.

(MAY 18, 2020) Alissa Thomas, M.D., assistant professor of neurological sciences and residency director for neurology, was featured in a Neurology Today article, titled "Neuropalliative Care During COVID-19—How Clinicians Help Patients and Families Cope with Isolation, Fear, and Life-Limiting Illness."

On May 11, awardees from the Larner College of Medicine Class of 2020, faculty and staff were recognized through an online Honors Celebration featuring remarks from Dean Page and videotaped presentations of each award.

Larner College of Medicine faculty members Gregory Holmes, M.D., professor and chair of neurological sciences, and Gary Stein, Ph.D., Perelman professor and chair of biochemistry, have been selected as University Scholars for the 2020-21 academic year.

The phrase “keep your distance” has taken on a whole new and deeply important meaning in the era of COVID-19 and even Match Day, the annual senior medical student rite of passage, was not “immune” to honoring this behavior. On March 20, 2020, members of the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont’s Class of 2020 went virtual to ensure social distancing while celebrating the news of where they will be spending the next three to seven years training as residents following graduation.

​The Teaching Academy at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont held its annual Snow Season Education Retreat on January 15-16, 2020 in the College’s Medical Education Center and UVM Davis Center. Highlights included an Induction Ceremony for 2019 new members and advanced members, the presentation of the annual Teaching and Education Awards, and the first annual Snow Season Debate, moderated by Professor and Chair of Pediatrics Lewis First, M.D.

The Larner College of Medicine's fourth annual "Celebrating Excellence in Research" series featured two days of presentations and recognition designed to highlight research performed by junior faculty, senior faculty, postdoctoral trainees, and graduate students at the College.

(JULY 31, 2019) Robert Shapiro, M.D., Ph.D., professor of neurological sciences, commented on findings he presented at the national American Headache Society meeting in an MDEdge/Neurology article.

The Larner College of Medicine’s Class of 2019 Honors Night on May 13 was all about celebrating achievements. Medical students, leaders, faculty members, family and friends gathered for the event in UVM’s Davis Center to honor the recipients of individual student awards, faculty awards, a staff award, and a department award, as well as recognize the new student inductees for the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and Gold Humanism Honor Society.

(APRIL 11, 2019) An article published on SheKnows in the health and wellness section titled, "6 Misconceptions about Migraines That Need to Be Dispelled ASAP", featured comments from Robert Shapiro, M.D., UVM professor of neurology and founding president of the Alliance for Headache Disorders Advocacy.

More than a dozen Larner College of Medicine faculty and scientists were recognized during the awards portion of the 14th annual Invention to Venture (I2V) conference April 5, 2019.

The UVM Larner College of Medicine Class of 2021 participated in a Foundations Awards celebration January 24. The event, which marks the completion of the first level of the Vermont Integrated Curriculum, provides an opportunity for second-year medical students to join with faculty and staff and express their gratitude for the contributions of these Larner College of Medicine community members to their medical education journey.

Harvey J. Grill, Ph.D., presented the Annual Stetson Lecture in Technological Advances in Medicine on Friday, September 14, 2018 in the UVM Davis Center’s Silver Maple Ballroom. Grill, a professor of behavioral neuroscience at the University of Pennsylvania and director of the Obesity Unit at the Institute of Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, discussed “Treating the Hyperphagia Driving Obesity: Neural Mechanisms of Feeding Inhibition.”

Helene Langevin, M.D., C.M., a visiting professor of neurological sciences at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont and director of the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, has been named director of the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health.

On July 18, 2018, UVM Larner College of Medicine clinical department chairs issued a letter to the community.

Vermont is among the top ten states in per capita research funding in the U.S., according to a State of Research at the College presentation delivered by Larner College of Medicine Senior Associate Dean for Research Gordon Jensen, M.D., Ph.D., at the Dean’s Excellence in Research Awards event held November 13, 2017. The last of three 2017 Celebrating Excellence in Research events held at the College on November 10 and 13, 2017, the awards ceremony recognized the accomplishments of faculty, residents, medical students, graduate students and postdoctoral trainees.

The intricacies of neuroimaging tools, brain health and disease, and brain safety were the themes of educational presentations brought to greater Burlington, Vt.-area elementary, middle and high school students by doctoral candidates in the University of Vermont Neuroscience Graduate Program in honor of Brain Awareness Week in March.

A new Nature Neuroscience study published by Assistant Professors of Pharmacology Thomas Longden, Ph.D., and Fabrice Dabertrand, Ph.D., determined that capillaries in the brain have a more active function that previously thought.

The newest members of the Teaching Academy at The Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at The University of Vermont were inducted during a ceremony and dinner held January 5, 2017 that kicked off the Snow Season Education Retreat at the Sheraton Burlington Hotel and Conference Center.

The University of Vermont Foundation hosted a special Investiture ceremony for an inaugural endowed position – the Robert W. Hamill, M.D. Green & Gold Professor in Neurological Sciences at the Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine – on December 6 in the Hoehl Gallery in the Health Science Research Facility. UVM President Tom Sullivan and Larner College of Medicine Dean Frederick Morin, M.D., presented James Boyd, M.D., associate professor of neurological sciences, as the first Hamill Green & Gold Professor at the event.
