The UVM MRI Center has partnered with investigators at the UVM College of Engineering and Mathematics to develop a non-traditional method that will use MRI to quantitatively measure and model the flow of contaminants through in fine and course grain sand. The idea is that when ground contamination occurs, especially in areas where there is a sharp interface between soil types, it is extremely difficult to remove it.The tube was previously flooded with a (MRI sensitive) contaminant, then flushed with water. The images above are indicative that even after being flushed with water, soil contaminants may be trapped within areas of silt or fine grain soils. Drs. George Pinder (CEMS) and Richard Watts (COM) are heading up this project.
