Message from the Dean

morin_podium250x180For nine years now I have had the pleasure of welcoming people to the University of Vermont College of Medicine. On September 23, 2016, for the very first time, I welcomed a group to The Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at The University of Vermont as we became the only medical school in the nation named in honor of a physician alumnus.

This naming is an expression of gratitude made by the University of Vermont Board of Trustees in recognition of the Larner's lifetime giving of $100 million to the College. This amazing act of generosity will allow us to unquestionably fulfill his vision for us to provide – in Dr. Larner's words –"a medical education second to none."

I'm not sure when I last felt more joyful and more inspired. Getting to know Bob and Helen Larner has been an incredible experience. There is nothing to compare with his deep commitment to our students and to our school. His direct engagement in our medical education mission, and his passion to use philanthropy to motivate others have been an inspiration to us all.

This most recent gift of $66 million is the culmination of a commitment that Dr. Larner made to his dean in the den of his home five years ago. With today's announcement he completes that commitment. In fact, he has over-delivered. It is now our awesome responsibility to deliver on our commitment to him.

With Dr. Larner's support, the College has been moving away from lecture-based courses and toward team-based learning, simulation, flipped classrooms, and other engaged learning activities. Recent initiatives include digitizing the entire curriculum, creating new innovative classrooms that facilitate active learning, building an enhanced simulation center to help students learn clinical skills, and recruiting an endowed Professor of Medical Education to lead the Teaching Academy.

This new gift will fully unleash the creativity and fire in the belly of our faculty to provide our students with a medical education which is unquestionably second to none.

Frederick C. Morin III, M.D.
Dean, The Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at The University of Vermont
