Message from the Dean

Larners Sullivan Morin photoDear College of Medicine Community -

It is with great sadness that I write to tell you that Robert Larner, M.D.’42 died peacefully early yesterday at his home in Woodland Hills, California. He was 99 years old.

Dr. Larner was a Vermont native who never forgot his roots, and never ceased being grateful for the start in life that he found at UVM. Born in 1918 in Burlington’s Old North End to a Russian immigrant roofer and his wife, he was the first and only member of his immediate family to go to college. He built a thriving internal medicine practice in the Los Angeles area that spanned 40 years.

In addition to his practice, he made prudent investments in California real estate that allowed him to give back to his alma mater with record-setting philanthropy – from the Larner Loan Fund that has helped nearly 1,300 UVM medical students afford their education, to substantial gifts that support the Clinical Simulation Laboratory, the building of leading-edge, team-based active learning classrooms, the funding of the nation’s first endowed professorship in medical education, and more. On September 23, 2016, in recognition of a record setting further commitment that brought the Larner lifetime giving to the College of Medicine to $100 million, the trustees of the University of Vermont announced the naming of The Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at The University of Vermont – the only medical school in the nation named for an alumnus.

To his wife, Helen, along with the entire Larner family, we extend our deepest sympathies. As his family has expressed to me, no matter how far away Dr. Larner was geographically, he always felt that he was a part of the life of this College of Medicine. His legacy will live on here for decades to come.

There is a Dedication Ceremony planned for April 28 in the Hoehl Gallery. We are currently planning on continuing to hold this event as a recognition of an extraordinary life in medicine and dedication to this institution.

Sincerely,

Rick Morin
