The University of Vermont Graduate College will be hosting a University Scholar lecture by Ira M. Bernstein, M.D.'83, John Van Sicklen Maeck Professor and chair of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at the Larner College of Medicine, on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. in Waterman Memorial Lounge. Bernstein will be discussing “Pregnancy and Preeclampsia: Insights into Women’s Health.” 

Bernstein serves as medical director of Women’s Health Care Services at the UVM Medical Center. After receiving his medical degree from UVM as an Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society member, he completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at George Washington University Hospital after which he returned to UVM in 1987, joining the faculty and completing a maternal fetal medicine fellowship. His many leadership roles include service as director of maternal fetal medicine (MFM) and MFM fellowship training, as well as senior associate dean for research at the College of Medicine. Bernstein's extensive research focuses on the investigation of human integrative physiology and its pathophysiologic variations during the course of pregnancy. Among his honors are recognition with a Medical Alumni Association Distinguished Academic Achievement Award in 2002 and research awards from the New England Perinatal Society, the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine and the Society for Reproductive Investigation. He currently serves on the medical advisory board for the Preeclampsia Foundation and is a member of the Executive Board of the Vermont Oxford Neonatal Network.
