UVM Cancer Center and Partners Distribute Free Sunscreen Dispensers

April 3, 2024 by Rachel Zwynenburg

14 sites will receive free sunscreen dispensers through the Vermont Community Sunscreen Dispenser Program.

Vermont has the second highest incidence rate of melanoma in the U.S. Exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun or tanning beds is a major risk factor for developing melanoma. Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer.

One way to reduce the risk of developing skin cancer is by using sunscreen with a SPF 30 or higher. The Vermont Community Sunscreen Dispenser Program, coordinated by statewide cancer coalition VTAAC, UVM Cancer Center, Dartmouth Cancer Center, and national non-profit IMPACT Melanoma, will supply fourteen (14) or more selected Vermont community park and recreation locations with a FREE automated sunscreen dispenser, a start-up supply of sunscreen, and an optional pole stand.

The purpose of these free sunscreen stations is two-fold: to provide easy access to SPF 30 sunscreen as well as remind Vermont residents and visitors that sun protection is critical to their optimal health and sun safety is in their hands — quite literally.

Applying is easy through an online application form, applications are due Monday, April 15, 2024.
