New York Times Features UVMMC Emergency Department Video by Kielman and Mercer

(OCTOBER 24, 2023) A powerful video on violence in the Emergency Department at the University of Vermont Medical Center by Roland Kielman and Ryan Mercer, communications specialists with the University of Vermont Health Network, with text by Helen Ouyang, M.D., M.P.H., associate professor at Columbia University, was featured in the New York Times Opinion section.

(OCTOBER 24, 2023) A powerful video on violence in the Emergency Department (ED) at the University of Vermont Medical Center by Roland Kielman and Ryan Mercer, communications specialists with the University of Vermont Health Network, with text by Helen Ouyang, M.D., M.P.H., associate professor at Columbia University, was featured in the New York Times Opinion section.

Titled “Stabbed - Kicked - Spit On: Violence in American Hospitals Is Out of Control,” the video captures interviews with ED staff—including Stacy Plante, RN, Laura Mulvey, M.D., Matt Looft, RN, Chary Scott, AEMT, ED technician Alex Dees, mental health technician Miranda Morris, medical assistant Ryan Baker, assistant professor of emergency medicine Daniel Barkhuff, M.D., and clinical patient safety attendant Amal Hussein—speaking about their traumatic experiences of assault while trying to do their jobs. Nearly 75 percent of health care workers in critical care say they have experienced violence in the past year, according to a 2023 Violence Study of Healthcare Workers and Systems Survey.
