Stem Cells, Cell Therapies, and Bioengineering in Lung Biology and Diseases

July 12-15, 2021
Hosted by the University of Vermont, Burlington, VT

This biennial invitational event draws top researchers in the field and their trainees, from around the world. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss recent research, explore opportunities for new collaborations, and identify the most important needs and priorities for future programs in stem cell, cell therapy, and bioengineering approaches to explore lung biology and/or prevent and treat lung diseases.

Although planned as a hybrid conference, with options to attend in person or online, the decision has been made to switch to an entirely virtual conference since in-person attendance in July has been deemed not feasible.

Active participation by all participants is important for a conference of this size. Therefore, if you have never attended before and would like to attend without submitting an abstract, please tell us how you heard about the conference and the name of the lab with which you are associated (or simply why you would like to attend) so we can pass this information along to the course directors for their consideration. Your inquiry is welcome. Please email the conference assistant.

Abstracts and Awards

The abstract submission deadline for oral presentation awards has expired.

However, we are now accepting poster abstracts until June 14, 2021.

Pre-Conference Workshop

Now a virtual format for techniques in stem cells, cell therapies and bioengineering!

"Minute to Win It" / Elevator Pitch Competition

Junior Investigators and Trainees whose abstracts are accepted for poster presentation will be invited to participate in our "Minute to Win It" competition which promises to be the highlight of the conference, once again!

Two prizes will be awarded.

This conference has been approved for CME credit.

Outstanding Abstract Achievement Presentation Awards
and Poster Presentation Awards

Outstanding Abstract Achievement Presentation Awards will be awarded to Junior Investigators and Trainees whose abstracts are selected through a blinded review process. The top abstracts will be selected for oral presentation at the conference. Two of the trainee awards will specifically be allotted to support participation of women, minority and/or those with disability. These oral presentation awards will cover the conference registration fee.

In addition to the oral presentation awards, competitively selected research posters will be judged during the conference in two Thematic Poster Presentation Sessions. Awards will be given to the top poster presentation in each session.

The deadline was been extended: All abstracts must be submitted by April 12, 2021 via an online abstract submission form.

For more details about submitting an abstract, including research categories, see the Awards and Abstracts page.

Optional Pre-Conference Workshop on State-of-the-Art Methods in Stem Cells, Cell Therapies, and Bioengineering
Friday, July 9, 2021

New virtual format: Workshop sessions will be pre-recorded and viewable online in advance of focused workshop Q&A sessions which will now be held on Friday, July 9, in advance of the conference. The workshop fee has been reduced for this virtual format.

For more information, see our Pre-Conference Workshop page.

"Minute to Win It" / Elevator Pitch Competition

The 2021 conference will again feature an elevator pitch competition where interested Junior Investigators and Trainees are invited to present a one-minute synopsis of their research. This competition will be judged during Session III on Tuesday, July 13. The top two elevator pitches will receive awards. For more information, see our Elevator Pitch page.

ISCT Signature Series

(Note: requires separate invitation and registration)

An additional linked feature of this conference will be an ISCT Scientific Signatures Series event on Cell and Gene-Based Therapies in Lung Diseases and Critical Illnesses. Sponsored by the International Society for Cell & Gene Therapy (ISCT), this invite-only event will take place virtually, immediately following the conference on Friday, July 16. This event will bring together the leading international academic and industry leaders for an intense and exciting day of exploring the current state of the field. For a draft program or more information about the event, please contact for information on how to attend.
