Course Description

The 2019 Primary Care Sports Medicine Conference is designed to update knowledge and skills in the diagnosis and management of common sports medicine problems. Topics will include discussions of medical and orthopedic issues in lectures and optional workshops on Friday afternoon. There will be ample opportunity for participants to ask questions and interact with faculty, who hail from the University of Vermont Health Network and local community. The teaching program includes lectures, workshops and extensive course materials.

Audience

The primary care team, including physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners and physician assistants, and other health professionals including physical therapists and athletic trainers, with an interest in sports medicine are encouraged to attend.

Objectives

After attending this conference, participants should be able to:

1. Explain the impact of daily exercise on brain health in children and adolescents.
2. Describe indications for hip arthroscopy, and contraindications.
3. Identify expected "abnormal" lab values in the ultra-endurance athlete.
4. Integrate rehabilitation into current training program(s).

Accreditation 

In support of improving patient care, the Robert Larner MD College of Medicine at the University of Vermont is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

The University of Vermont designates this live activity for a maximum of 14.0 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

This program has been reviewed and is acceptable for up to 14.0 Nursing Contact Hours.

This Live activity, Primary Care Sports Medicine Conference 2019, with a beginning date of 10/10/2019, has been reviewed and is acceptable for up to 14.0 Prescribed credits by the American Academy of Family Physicians. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

This program was planned by and for the healthcare team, and learners will receive 14.0 Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE) credit for learning and change.

The Vermont Office of Professional Regulation has approved this course for 14.0 hours of continuing education for Physical Therapy.

Pharmacotherapeutic credit: 0.25 credits.

Workshops

Registrants will participate in 3 of 9 workshops to be conducted on Friday afternoon. The fun and innovative format of these sessions will focus on different approaches to a myriad of sports medicine-related problems. The presentations will raise important management issues which will facilitate lively interaction between faculty and participants. There is limited enrollment in some workshops. Every effort will be made to provide registrants with their top choices.

A limited number of rooms with reduced rates has been reserved for conference registrants at The Hampton Inn by Hilton. We strongly recommend that you make your room reservations as soon as possible. Our discounted rate is: $119 single-quad occupancy per room, per night, plus applicable Vermont State tax. To obtain the special rates, please make your room reservation directly with the hotel prior to September 9, 2019 by calling (802) 655-6177. Room rates cannot be guaranteed after September 9, 2019 . As Vermont’s Fall Foliage season is a sold-out international attraction, space is limited during this very busy season and regional hotels sell out very quickly. Please reserve early!

Attendee Registration: As of September 6, 2019, the University of Vermont has transitioned to a new online registration system. Pre-registration for the conference will close at noon on Friday, October 4. You are most welcome to register at the event. Fee Summary

The course fee includes tuition, comprehensive electronic syllabus, workshops, continental breakfast each morning, coffee breaks, and lunch on Thursday (only) for registrants. Friday is lunch on your own. 

Enrollment is limited; please register by September 8, 2019. An additional $75 fee will be added after that date.

Conference Syllabus

The conference syllabus will be available as an electronic download with presentations as PDF files (included with your registration fee). Please plan to bring your laptop or electronic device with you to the conference to view the conference materials as well as to complete the online conference evaluations via the UVM CMIE online credit system, My Credits. You will receive a notification via email a week prior to the conference with instructions for accessing the presentations. Please note: printed syllabus, paper copies of evaluations and paper CMIE certificates will not be provided.
