Vermont Academic Detailing Program

Refining Medication Prescribing Practices

The University of Vermont College of Medicine Office of Primary Care offers Academic Detailing, a free educational opportunity for Vermont health care professionals.  The goal of Academic Detailing is to promote high-quality, evidence-based, patient-centered, cost-effective pharmaceutical treatment decisions.

The program consists of one-hour, case-based interactive sessions geared to practitioners who prescribe drugs.  Sessions are delivered at Vermont practices by UVM’s Academic Detailing team--physicians, Rich Pinckney, MD, MPH and Charles MacLean, MD, and clinical pharmacists, Amanda Kennedy, PharmD, BCPS, Michele Corriveau, RPh, and Gary Starecheski, RPh.  This program presents an objective overview of evidence from studies about the various drugs used to treat a specific medical condition.

What is Academic Detailing?

The Vermont Academic Detailing
Program Overview PDF

Pharmaceutical companies use person-to-person contact to influence practitioners to prescribe their drugs.  This process is known as “detailing”.  Detailing is effective at increasing the number of prescriptions written, and pharmaceutical companies spend millions of dollars each year to run these programs.

Academic detailing, or counter-detailing, is “university-based educational outreach”.  There is no drug company sponsorship associated with the Vermont Academic Detailing Program nor do the program faculty have any ties to the pharmaceutical industry.  Thus, they are able to objectively review clinical topics, covering the latest evidence for lifestyle changes and generic medications in addition to the latest in medication releases.

The Vermont Academic Detailing Program is sponsored by the UVM College of Medicine Office of Primary Care with funding and other support from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont/Vermont Health Plan, the Fletcher Allen Community Health Foundation, the Vermont Department of Health, and the University of Vermont.

For more information or to schedule a session for your practice, please contact Laurie McLean at (802) 656-2179 or lmclean@uvm.edu. Click here to download the sign-up form which may be faxed back to the Program.
