Holidays and Vacations:
Clerkship Year

Policy 570.20

Policy Statement

Students will be excused for major holidays of personal significance.  If students are on a clinical rotation, they are expected to notify the course director and arrange their clinical/call schedules by advance planning and trading with colleagues to accommodate these needs.

  1. All University fully observed holidays will be observed for all students on all clerkships. During all fully observed holidays no formal teaching sessions will be scheduled, and students will not be expected to be do clinical work or be “on call.”  Fully observed holidays include:
    1. Thanksgiving (begins no later than 6 p.m. the Wednesday before Thanksgiving until the following Monday morning when clinical activities resume)
    2. Winter Holiday (Includes 12/24, 12/25 and 12/31, 1/1)
  2. Partially observed holidays will be observed in accordance with the practice of the specific clerkship, clinical department, and clinical service/team to which the clerkship student is assigned. Clerkship directors must make expectations regarding attendance and clinical/call duties during partially observed holidays, explicit on or prior to the first day of the clerkship. During partially observed holidays, no formal teaching sessions will be scheduled, but students may be expected to do clinical work or be on call. During partially observed holidays, UVM and LCOM are typically closed and some, but not all, clinical offices at UVMMC may also be closed. Clerkship directors may elect full observation of partially observed holidays if they wish. If so, then no formal teaching sessions, clinical work, or call will be assigned. Partially observed holidays include:
    1. Memorial Day
    2. Independence Day
    3. Labor Day
    4. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
    5. President’s Day
  3. Vacation periods will be observed as follows:

    2. A minimum of two weeks including the Christmas and New Year's Holidays
    3. A minimum of one week in the summer months (June-August)
    4. A minimum of one week during the clerkship year depending on flight-group assignment
  4. Published vacation periods are subject to change.
  5. Leaves of absence are not covered by this policy statement. Students seeking such leave should review the Leave of Absence policy , and must consult with the Associate/Assistant Dean for Students. Taking a Leave of Absence could delay a student’s graduation date.
