Education2_250x180Medical student education is an essential mission of the Department and one that we relish.

Our goal is not necessarily to ensure that students at The Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at The University of Vermont become Pediatricians but to ensure that all students understand children and their families, community and culture in health and illness.

Medical Student Education

The faculty in the Department of Pediatrics participate in all aspects of the Vermont Integrated Curriculum.

In Foundations, Pediatric faculty members direct courses (Introduction to Clinical Decision Making and Attacks and Defenses), facilitate in the small group weekly course Professionalism, Communication and Reflection, precept new students in their first pediatric clinical experiences and lead seminars and small group discussions on a variety of pediatric topics.

During the Clerkship Year, the Pediatric Clerkship is 7weeks long with inpatient and outpatient experiences at The University of Vermont Children's Hospital or at one of three affiliate sites: St. Mary's Hospital in West Palm Beach, Florida, Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Maine or Danbury Hospital in Danbury, Connecticut.

During Advanced Integration, the Department offers one-month acting internships at The University of Vermont Children's Hospital in Neonatology and general inpatient Pediatric Medicine. A host of senior selectives in primary care or subspecialty medicine is also available.

For those students at all interested in a career in Pediatrics, the Pediatric Special Interest Group (led by students and mentored by faculty members) meets periodically throughout the year, hosting a variety of events and activities related to pediatrics and child health. All students are welcome to attend. Faculty in the Department are more than happy to serve as advisors to students interested in Pediatrics.

If you have any questions regarding the medical student programs, please contact Dr. William Raszka, the Pediatric Clerkship Director at or Patricia McClellan, the Pediatric Clerkship Coordinator, at
