Geriatrics Experts Host Cognitive Impairment Q & A Session

An older woman and man look at a document together, as the woman points to something on the page.

Health care professionals from across Vermont gathered for the Vermont Geriatrics Conference this spring. Presented by the University of Vermont Center on Aging, this annual event provides the latest information on clinical care and supports education and skills development to improve care for older patients. This year's agenda included a creative teaching session called “Ask the Expert,” hosted by course director Isaura Menzies, M.D., MPH, associate professor of medicine in the Division of Geriatrics. Dr. Menzies used audience-generated questions to query Holly and Bob Miller Chair in Memory and Aging Michael LaMantia, M.D. M.P.H., associate professor of medicine, chief of geriatrics. Read more >>

Faculty and Staff News

  • Jason Botten, Ph.D.

Jason Botten, Ph.D., (pictured at right) professor in the Division of Immunobiology, was awarded three patents in 2022, for the following inventions:
    • A novel means to convert virulent arenaviruses into live attenuated vaccines: Botten's team, including former CMB graduate student Chris Ziegler, Ph.D., and former postdoc Emily Bruce, Ph.D., discovered novel host and viral determinants that drive the production of a special class of viral particles called defective interfering (DI) particles. Theoretically, the more DI particles a virus produces, the less virulent it will be. Their invention takes advantage of these discoveries such that they hope to engineer a virus to overproduce these DI particles, which should attenuate it.
    • Discovery that the human protein called ERGIC-53 is essential for viruses: This host protein is nonessential for human health, but critically required for several families of pathogenic RNA viruses to complete their life cycle. Dr. Botten, along with former CMB graduate student Joseph Klaus, Ph.D., and Professor Anne Mason, Ph.D., were granted a patent describing a strategy to target ERGIC-53 to make a broad-spectrum antiviral that could be used to treat several families of RNA viruses, including coronaviruses, arenaviruses, and filoviruses.
    • A method for targeting threonyl tRNA synthetases to treat various human diseases. This work came out of the Christopher Francklyn, Ph.D., laboratory.

In June, Dr. Botten participated in the University of Vermont annual SPARK-VT competition, where faculty pitch their commercialization ideas to a panel of experts who challenge them with questions, then deliberate in private before announcing the winning teams, who receive a $45,000 award. Botten’s pitch won an award, which will fund a strategy to develop a broad-spectrum antiviral by targeting ERGIC-53 with small molecules. This work will be done in collaboration with Atomwise Inc, who will use their world-leading artificial intelligence AtomNet® technology to identify the compounds for the antiviral drug screen proposed in the application. Notably, Atomwise chose this project through a competitive process. By selecting the application, Botten's team was awarded an Atomwise Artificial Intelligence Molecular Screen (AIMS) award.

Research and Grants

Sherrie Khadanga, M.D.

Sherrie Khadanga, M.D., assistant professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, is recipient of the inaugural Wolgemuth Fellowship for her study “Remote Smoking Cessation in Hospitalized Cardiac Patients: Bridging the Post-discharge Care Gap.”

In addition, Dr. Khadanga is recipient of the UVM Health Network Research Award for her study, Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation in Heart Failure Patients to Improve Functional Recovery Following Hospitalization.

Research Advances and Projects

Through conduct of large scale pragmatic randomized controlled trials started early during the pandemic, researchers in the Division of Hematology/Oncology discovered that therapeutic heparin hastens recovery, reduces venous thromboembolism and may improve mortality in patients at low risk of bleeding who are hospitalized on medical wards. Results are already incorporated into several guidelines including those of National Heart, Lung, and Blodd Institute (NHLBI), the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP ‘CHEST’), the American Society of Hematology, and most recently, draft guidelines of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis, which allocated this as a Level 1a recommendation (ie., supported by the highest level of evidence). The UVM Medical Center (UVMMC) implemented this into its COVID guidelines. UVMMC was a contributing site, led by Christos Colovos, M.D., PhD in the Department of Surgery. Mary Cushman, M.D., M.S.c., was coPI of one trial on this research question, and on the protocol development committees of related trials.

Mary Cushman, M.D., M.Sc., professor in the Division of Hematology/Oncology, joined a Collaborative Cohort of Cohorts for COVID-19 Recovery Research, part of the NIH "Recover" project, Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery.

A study by Ralph Budd, M.D., professor in the Division of Immunobiology, determined one of the ligands for the T cell receptor from a human synovial gamma/delta T cells, and that ligand expression is regulated by the metabolic state of the cell.

Cory Teuscher, Ph.D., a professor in the Division of Immunobiology, and colleagues have been working on a study, titled "Possible Contribution of X-Y Intragenomic Conflict to the Male Biased Sex Dimorphism in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Prevalence." The findings support a possible role for X-Y intragenomic conflict in ASD and suggest that the MB-SD in ASD prevalence may not only reflect negative selection of female fetuses early in the course of conception/pregnancy, but also negative selection of X-bearing sperm during spermatogenesis. Dr. Teuscher presented an abstract of this research at the 16th Annual Meeting of the Organization for the Study of Sex Differences.

A University of Vermont Center for Biomedical Innovation (UVM CBI) SEED Project Research Award of $2,000 supported a collaboration among the Division of Nephrology, UVM Medical Center nephrology department, UVM engineering department and the UVM Center for Biomedical Innovation to produce the Hemodialysis Filter Rotator Filter Rotator/Manipulator. The project served as a two-term Electrical and Biomedical Engineering/Mechanical Engineering capstone design course. The first functional prototype of the Hemodialysis Filter Rotator to facilitate mechanical anticoagulation-free hemodialysis with the NxStage Hemodialysis Machine was completed in April 2022. Macaulay Onuigbo, M.D., professor in the Division of Nephrology, was principal investigator.

Marios Prikis, M.D., associate professor in the Division of Nephrology, is involved in three collaborative research projects:

  • Collaboration with Interventional Radiology - The Evolution of Performing a Kidney Biopsy: A Single Center Experience Comparing Native and Transplant Kidney Biopsies by Interventional Radiologists and Nephrologists. The manuscript was accepted for revision, revision submitted, BMC Nephrology.
  • Collaboration with Yale Transplant and Yale Infectious Disease, comparing high risk donor organ utilization before and after the change in the definition of high-risk donors by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • Collaboration with Brown University Infectious Disease, evaluating cell free donor derived DNA testing as a predictor for BK nephropathy after kidney transplantation.
