Student Activities

The Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) is a student run organization which seeks to provide a forum where medical students interested in family medicine learn about, address, celebrate, and integrate themselves into this dynamic specialty.

The FMIG is active within the medical school, recruiting and promoting family medicine during orientation week. We sponsor lectures during Primary Care Week, organize yearly casting, injection, vital signs, and suturing clinics, host brown bag lunches on various topics, and organize an annual Family Medicine Picnic to welcome new students. All of these events are well attended and well received. They give students the opportunity to learn about family medicine and its diversity of practice. Student members participate at the statewide Vermont Academy of Family Physicians annual meeting and board meetings, regionally at the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) regional meetings, and nationally at the AAFP’s National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students (NCFMR/S).

Family medicine students continue to come together as they progress through medical school for sharing experiences and celebrating successes. Our 4th year students share experiences with our 3rd year students on how to prepare for the residency application and interviewing process and assist at our various clinics held for the 1st year students throughout the year.

In addition to these great activities, we have wonderful advisors who are highly involved with the medical school and their own practices. They mentor students and residents, and continue to shape family medicine in Vermont and beyond.
