Visiting Student Elective using Telemedicine

Schlein with studentsTelemedicine for Education of Learners at Larner in Emergency Medicine (TELL-EM)

We are excited to present a new telemedicine subspecialty elective. TELL-EM represents an innovative model using video-enhanced telehealth for clinical education of 4th year virtually visiting medical students bound for Emergency Medicine.

Our TELL-EM rotation provides EM-bound 4th year medical students with an  educationally rewarding and clinically immersive experience utilizing telemedicine, allowing students to:
• hone clinical skills and gain experience with tele-emergency medicine,
• benefit from outstanding teaching from dedicated EM faculty both in and out of the clinical setting, and
• gain familiarity with the training environment, as well as the faculty, staff, and residents at the UVM Emergency Medicine Residency Program.

This innovative course includes abbreviated 4-hour clinical shifts using telemedicine technology to see evaluate patients in our ED and work one on one with our faculty as a member of the care team. Students will also participate in weekly residency didactics, Foundations in EM interactive sessions, and a PD/APD mentorship meeting. Students will also prepare and virtually deliver a case presentation, and selected presentations will receive faculty support toward publication. All students will be offered a Subspecialty SLOE to support their ERAS applications.
