Finding Our Common Ground: Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (FOCG) provides a longitudinal, developmental framework that is designed to enhance the development of cultural humility skills. Knowledge of these concepts are essential to working in a diverse community, such as ours, as well as to creating and sustaining a culture of inclusive excellence.

The program was developed based on relevant data and best practices that indicate cultural humility development is best achieved when it is voluntary, it takes place over time and engages people to first spend time in reflection on their individual identities. The goal of this curriculum is to promote diversity, equity and inclusion as an opportunity for developing lifelong learning skills by participants.


Level 1 content is designed to give individuals an opportunity for reflection on their own cultural characteristics, history, values, belief systems and to become familiarize with diversity terminology. The personalized Intercultural Development Plan provides a road map for further development.

Level 2 activities builds upon knowledge gains from foupdations, and allows for further reflection and practice. Individual's use their Intercultural Development Plan to engage in a variety of activities meant to further develop cultural humility skills.



  • Independent Exploration – relevant articles, books and films
  • Expanded, higher level readings
  • Retake of the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI)
  • Revise Intercultural Development Plan for continual engagement

Program Objectives

At the conclusion of these activities, you will be able to:

  • Define diversity, inclusion and describe their relationship to creating an inclusive campus
  • Describe and evaluate inclusion strategies
  • Identify opportunities to apply inclusion strategies
  • Define key terms (identity, multiple identities, power, privilege, bias, empathy, intersectionality, microaggressions)
  • Define and recognize “-isms” and “-phobias”
  • Learn when and how to employ “ally behavior”
  • Explore concepts of resilience and self-care to begin building personal resources
  • Apply basic communication techniques that support diversity and inclusion goals
