  • are able to juggle multiple tasks at once and prioritize accordingly
  • are organized and manage your time wisely
  • enjoy working with others
  • are your best self when you are helping someone else
  • believe that you have done everything you could possible do at this stage of your life to prepare for a medical career
  • have thoroughly examined your own abilities, experiences, and motivations,

…then you may be ready to apply to the Larner College of Medicine.

We want you to know yourself well. Taking the time to be assured of your readiness to enter a challenging and vigorous program is always beneficial.

Whatever time you spend anticipating medical school is never lost or wasted; all of your experiences are preparing you to be a caring, compassionate person on the way to becoming an excellent physician. The average age for entering medical students at UVM is slightly higher than other medical schools, reflecting the fact that many of our medical students take time after undergraduate school to gain life experience in unique and wonderful ways. These experiences may be health-related, volunteer settings with diverse groups of people, and other creative endeavors that only our prospective students can imagine. At UVM, we value and encourage those experiences knowing that they will inform the knowledge and empathy of our graduating physicians.

The admissions process is the start of a journey.

The Larner College of Medicine is here to help you attain your goal of becoming a caring, compassionate, and exceptional physician by working with teams who assure the health and well-being of communities around the world. Successfully going through our admissions process, including the application and interview stages, assures you, the Larner College of Medicine, and the public of your readiness to begin training to become a physician.

We look forward to joining you on this journey!

Am I ready for a career in Medicine?

To help you determine your readiness, you can use the Core Personal Competencies for Entering Medical Students developed by the American Associate of Medical Colleges (AAMC).

While going through each of these competencies, ask yourself:  Can I give several examples of the knowledge and skills I have learned and how I have applied my knowledge for EACH competency?

Your responses will help you assess your readiness to apply to medical school and identify the areas for further development. If you are ready, we encourage you to apply to UVM!
