Jim Wallace, MD*

Dr. Wallace is the Medical Director of Radiation Oncology at the UVM Medical Center. He is an associate professor at the Larner College of Medicine at UVM, and an active member of the UVM Cancer Center, serving on the planning committee of the Men's Health and Cancer Conference as well as many other programs and meetings. He, like his father before him, is a graduate of the University of Vermont, both in undergraduate and medical school.

Wendy McKinnon, MS, CGC*

Wendy is a certified genetic counselor who specializes in genetic counseling and testing for familial cancer. She is the senior genetic counselor for the Familial Cancer Program at the UVM Cancer Center and the UVM Medical Center, a multidisciplinary program for individuals and families at risk for hereditary cancer.

Marie Wood, MD*

 

Dr. Wood is the Director of the Familial Cancer Program at the UVM Medical Center, a Professor at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont, and a co-leader of the Cancer Control and Population Health Sciences program at the UVM Cancer Center. She is the founder and principal investigator of the High Risk Breast Program (HRBP) which was established in 2003 as a clinical program with a research focus on women with a moderate to high risk for developing breast cancer.

 3.3B: COFFEE CHAT: Breast Lymphedema 101 Caitlin Dorka, PT, DPT, CLT Caitlin graduated UVM Physical therapy school in 2015 with her Doctorate of Physical Therapy, and worked in a skilled nursing facility for a year before finding a home at the Rehab Therapy Center at Fanny Allen.  In 2017, she obtained her lymphedema certification after discovering a love for treatment lymphedema. She now works primarily with patients with swelling disorders of different causes, ranging from cancer treatment, to obesity, to congenital disorders.  
 3.3C: COFFEE CHAT: Medical Marijuana: Your Questions Answered Ada Puches Ada Puches is the Community Outreach Coordinator for Champlain Valley Dispensary. Ada provides educational outreach on cannabinoids and the state’s medical marijuana program to hospitals, clinics, private health care providers, patient groups and any parties interested in learning about this state-approved medicine. Ada’s work history includes advocacy on integrative health practices.

3.4: Exploring Mindfulness: Practices, Benefits and Scientific EvidenceTheresa Hudziak, MSTheresa is a qualified Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) instructor, receiving her training through the rigorous program at UMASS Medical Center, Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Healthcare, and Society.  She is also a certified yoga teacher.  Theresa teaches the Mindfulness Tools program, based on the 8-week MBSR curriculum, through the UVMMC Vermont Cancer Center, funded by the Victoria Buffum Endowment.  Donna Smith, PT, DPT Donna is an adjunct professor at UVM in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Department of Rehabilitation and Movement Sciences.  She is a qualified MBSR instructor, receiving her training through the rigorous program at UMASS Medical Center, Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Healthcare, and Society. Robert Cade, PharmD, BCOP

Robert Cade graduated from Virginia Tech with bachelor’s degrees in biology and biochemistry in 2002.  Following graduation from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy summa cum laude in 2011, he completed an ASHP-accredited pharmacy practice residency at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Maine.  He then went on to complete an ASHP-accredited oncology pharmacy specialty residency at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Tampa, Florida.  He has been employed at the University of Vermont Medical Center and Cancer Center since 2013, where he practices oncology pharmacy on the inpatient hematology/oncology teaching service.  He resides in Milton, Vermont with his wife Meghan and dog Ireland.

Mark Plante, MD

Dr. Plante is Chief of Urology / Residency Program Director at the University of Vermont Medical Center and the Green and Gold Professor of Urology at the Larner College of Medicine at UVM. He earned his MD from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. Dr. Plante was recently awarded Distinguished Educator status in the teaching academy and has previously received the Graduate Medical Education Teacher of the Year award at the University of Vermont.

Janet Ely, APRN

Janet Ely is a hematology/oncology nurse practitioner at the University of Vermont Medical Center and an adjunct professor at the Larner College of Medicine at UVM in Burlington, VT. Her clinical interests include medical oncology and palliative care.

 Kathy McBeth, MA Kathy is a Licensed Psychologist, with a focus on health psychology and adjustment to illness. Kathy is two-time cancer survivor and has been involved with the Women's Health and Cancer Conference for a number of years, first as an attendee, then as a presenter. She is a board member of the Northern New England Clinical Oncology Society, a member of the American Psychosocial Oncology Society, on the steering committee for Vermonters Taking Action Against Cancer, on the Nursing & Allied Health Professional Advisory Committee, and the vice-president of the Stowe Weekend of Hope. Kathy McBeth MA 2

Mary Stanley is a breast surgeon now in private practice in South Burlington. She specializes in the surgical care of all breast diseases. Mary has lived in the Burlington area with her family since 1998.

 Ruth Heimann, MD, PhD* Ruth Heimann, M.D., Ph.D Radiation Oncologist and a Program Leader at the UVM Cancer Center. She has been named to U.S. News and World Report’s Top Doctors list for 2012-2013. Dr. Heimann placed in the top 1% for excellence in Radiation Oncology with special expertise in Breast, Gastrointestinal and Lung Cancer Ruth Heimann, MD, PhD
 Hibba Rehman, MD* 

Dr. Hibba Rehman is an attending oncology and hematology physician at the University of Vermont Cancer Center and assistant professor at the Larner College of Medicine at UVM in Burlington, VT. She specializes in sarcoma, lung cancer, breast cancer and rare tumors.

Her research interests include molecular mechanisms involving pathogenesis of cancer and role of targeted therapies in cancer.

To Dr. Rehman, her patients are her passion. She believes in treating her patients as a person and not just treating their cancer as a disease. She believes there is a lot more to healing then just treatment.

Cancer Prevention: Annual Screenings All Women Need to Know

Panel led by Krista Evans, MD

Dr. Krista Evans is a general surgeon specializing in colon and rectal surgery at The University of Vermont Medical Center, assistant professor at the UVM Larner College of Medicine, and Senior co-chair for the 22nd Annual Women's Health and Cancer Conference. Dr. Evans specializes in, among other subject areas, colon and rectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, hemorrhoids, and general surgery. As the daughter of a physician, Dr. Evans saw how her father enjoyed taking care of patients on a daily basis. She was drawn to surgery because it can be a solution to a health problem, but also a means to improve quality of life.

 Ashley Couture is a Speech-Language Pathologist at the UVM Health Network. Her clinical interests lie in Adult Neurogenics, Augmentative Alternative Communication, Swallowing Disorders, Voice Treatment, and the UVM Medical Center Transgender Youth Program.

 Alissa Thomas, MD* Dr. Alissa Thomas is a neuro-oncologist at The University of Vermont Medical Center and assistant professor at the University of Vermont College of Medicine Department of Neurological Sciences. She specializes in the treatment of primary and metastatic brain tumors, central nervous system lymphoma, and neurologic complications of cancer. Dr. Thomas completed her neurology residency at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and her fellowship in Neuro-Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.  Her research focuses on novel treatments for primary and metastatic brain tumors, as well as quality of life for patients with brain cancer.Alissa Thomas, MD 
 3.12: Needing Nutrition-The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly Through Head and Neck Cancer Treatment Lakshmi Joshi Boyle, MS, CCC-SLP  

Lakshmi Joshi Boyle is a Speech-Language Pathologist and supervisor at the University of Vermont Medical Center. She specializes in geriatrics, neurologic, and oncology rehabilitation. She treats patients with conditions such as ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), brain injury, concussion, multiple sclerosis (MS), and stroke.

Lakshmi’s current research interests include outcome measures for head and neck cancer and standardization of UVM Medical Center Dysphagia diets, diets which feature textures of food that make it easier to swallow to be in compliance with the International Dysphagia Diets Standard Initiative.

  Jennifer May, RD Jennifer has been a registered dietitian at the University of Vermont Cancer Center for the past 10 years. She provides nutrition counseling to oncology patients and offers lectures on various cancer and cancer prevention topics. Jennifer received her Bachelor's of Science in Dietetics/Nutrition & Food Sciences at the University of Vermont and completed her dietetic internship at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.  May-Jennifer
