PGP Installation and Enrollment Process

The information below pertains to computers running the COMIS baseline. If you are using PGP on a LCOM computer that does not have the COMIS baseline on it then the information on the UVM web page pertains to you. That web page can be found at https://www.uvm.edu/it/security/pgp.

You will need know your UVM NetID and password to successfully complete this process. This is the username and password that you would use to log into the UVM PeopleSoft system. If you do not know this password you can reset it yourself on the UVM Network ID & Account Management website.

Download

  1. Use your UVM NetID and password to log into the UVM Software Download Archive page.
  2. Click on the "Microsoft Windows" link.
  3. Scroll down the alphabetical list of software until you find the two PGP Desktop listings. One listing is for the 64-bit version of PGP Desktop and should only be used if you are positive that you have a 64-Bit version of the Windows Operating System running on your computer. Most COMIS computers are not running 64-Bit Operating Systems and the 64-Bit installation file should not be used.
  4. Click the "Download PGP Desktop now" button to start your PGP download.
  5. When prompted, save the installation file to your local C: drive. We recommend saving the file to your C:\Data folder.

Installation

  1. Close all open Windows and running programs on your computer in preparation for the installation.
  2. Navigate to the folder where you downloaded the installation file. If you followed the installation steps above this will likely be C:\Data.
  3. Double-click the downloaded file to run it.
  4. Accept the PGP license agreement and all other default installation options.
  5. Click the "Yes" button to restart your computer when the installation is complete.

More detailed instructions for installing PGP on your computer can be found on UVM's PGP Installation website.

Initial Enrollment

  1. After you log onto your computer you will be presented with the PGP Enrollment window. Type your UVM NetID and password and click OK to complete the enrollment process.
  2. Reboot the computer.
  3. You should now see the PGP login screen appear before the Windows Operating System loads. Enter in your NetID password to continue to load Windows. This should be the only time that you will be required to use this password to log on. You will use your COMIS Windows password for each subsequent login.
  4. Log into Windows as normal. For each subsequent login you should automatically be signed into Windows through the PGP Single Sign-On feature.

Initial Encryption

The encryption process will begin once you have successfully completed the enrollment process and rebooted your computer. The amount of time the initial encryption process will take depends on the storage size of your hard drive. You can shut down your computer during the encryption process. It will resume encryption when the computer is turned back on. You can continue to use your computer while it is encrypting, but it may run hotter and slower than normal.
