EXTENDED DEADLINE FOR EDUCATION TOPIC POSTERS - Snow Season Education Retreat, January 11 – 12, 2018
We heard you! It is a busy time of year so we extended the deadline for poster abstracts for the Snow Season Education Retreat to Friday, December 8.Submit poster submissions (current or past work) for the 2018 Snow Season Education Retreat. This is an opportunity for UVM LCOM educators (including work with residents and students) to share ideas and to collaborate across departments. We are particularly interested in work related to the education of professionals across the continuum of learners.
To submit an abstract, please use the poster abstract submission form, and submit to teaching.academy@med.uvm.edu.
The schedule is available online, and all events are at the Sheraton Hotel and Conference Center. There is no charge to attend. Click here to register today!
Thursday evening includes a reception, poster session, and recognition dinner. Friday is a daylong education retreat featuring workshops, networking, and keynote speaker, Susan Skochelak, MD, MPH, Group Vice President, Medical Education, American Medical Association. This event is open to all faculty.
THE FRYMOYER SCHOLARS PROGRAM CALL FOR PROPOSALS 2018
Through the Frymoyer Scholars Program, the John W. and Nan P. Frymoyer Fund for Medical Education supports physicians and nurses who are actively engaged in teaching University of Vermont medical and nursing students and who embody the best qualities of the clinician teacher.
Individuals selected as Frymoyer Scholars are awarded up to $25,000 a year for two years to develop innovative educational products or programs and/or to improve their teaching skills and in turn the relationship between clinician and patient. REMINDER WRITER’S WORKSHOP MEETS AT A NEW TIME!
The monthly Writer’s Workshop meets on the first Monday of the month at noon. In January, the group will meet on the second Monday due to the holiday. The next meeting is Monday, January 8 at noon in The Teaching Academy Resource Room 130F. Competency-based Education - Where are we now and where are we going?

The Winter 2018 IAMSE Web Seminar Series focuses on the current state of Competency-Based Education across the health professions and its future directions. The series begins with an overview of current assessment theories, tools and practices and explains how these have been adapted to better reflect learners’ attainment of competency within a competency-based framework. This is followed by a session that explores the relationship between memory and learning and describes strategies to better prepare and equip learners to achieve success within a competency-based framework. The AAMC Core EPA work group next provides an update on the integration of “entrustment activities and entrustment assessment tools” into a competency-based framework. The following presentation explores the benefits, challenges and outcomes of incorporating Longitudinal Integrated Clerkships (LICs) into competency-based medical education. The series closes with an appraisal of the Education in Pediatrics Across the Continuum (EPAC) curriculum as a content-focused, “continuous” competency-based model that spans undergraduate and graduate medical education. Upon completion of this series, participants will be better able to describe the evolution of competency-based education in the health professions. Participants will also be able to identify opportunities within their own institutions for adopting and adapting a competency-based educational framework.
