Congratulations Teaching Academy Members!

Melissa Davidson, MD, Teaching Academy Distinguished Educator, Professor of Anesthesiology, Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education and Bridget Marroquin, MD, Teaching Academy Distinguished Educator, Associate Professor of Anesthesiology received their Master of Science in Health Professions Education at the MGH Institute of Health Professions.

An article published on PHYS.ORG, titled "Investigating gender equity: Researchers analyze gender distribution of institutional leadership roles," and written and distributed by Elsevier, features comments by Sarah Schlein, MD, UVM associate professor of emergency medicine and Wilderness Medicine Fellowship director. Schlein is a lead investigator on two related studies published in the current issue of the journal Wilderness & Environmental Medicine.

Laura Greene, MD, Teaching Academy Master Teacher,  Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and Interim Assistant Dean for Admissions, recently accepted an appointment as program director of the Pathology Residency Program, effective July 1, 2023. She will assume the role from Scott Anderson, MD, professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, who has served as program director since 2009.

2023 Snow Season Education Retreat Call for Abstracts   

Are you interested in sharing your educational work and building your academic education credentials (whether you are starting from scratch or have done a lot…or anywhere in between)? This is an open invitation to submit a poster about your educational work, innovation, or research at a receptive and welcoming event.  We are seeking poster submissions (whether current or recently presented work) for the 2023 Snow Season Education Retreat. This will be an opportunity for UVM LCOM educators to share ideas and to collaborate across departments. We are particularly interested in work related to the education of professionals across the continuum of learners.  

Categories:

  • Innovations: Descriptions of innovations in teaching, assessment, educational administration.
  • Research: Studies on topics related to health professions education. All approaches to inquiry (e.g., qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods, systematic review) are welcome.
  • Quality Improvement: Examples of CQI approaches applied to health professions education.

We will consider posters you have presented at previous venues, other than Teaching Academy events.  

The Snow Season Education Retreat will be held on Thursday, January 12 and Friday, January 13, 2023.  If your abstract is selected, you will be expected to attend the Poster Session on Friday, January 13, 2023, 8:00-9:00am, in-person at the Davis Center. If you request a peer-review for your poster, you must be present during the Snow Season Poster Session.

The deadline for poster abstract submission is November 7, 2022. 2023_Snow_Season_Poster_Abstract_Submission_Form Abstract must be no more than 300 words. Please submit your poster proposal to teaching.academy@med.uvm.edu

MD and residency programs have an abundance of assessment and evaluation data (big “education” data).  Effectively synthesizing program data for quality improvement, decision-making and scholarship requires both data analytic and design skills.  Thus, all medical educators can benefit from gaining basic skills in data visualization to be better consumers of program data and to better communicate their scholarship.

AAMC National Call for Anti-Racist Medical Education Resources

The AAMC invites submissions for inclusion in the new Constructing an Equitable Learning Environment compendium, a collection of timely and diverse materials that support an anti-racist, inclusive, and equity-centered learning environment. Successful submissions will include content aligned with the competency domains described in the AAMC Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Competencies for Medical Educators. Resources will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and the call will remain open until the compendium addresses all of the competency domains. Register for Final Forum on Revising Foundational Competencies for UME

ACGME, AAMC and AACOM have launched an initiative to create a common set of foundational competencies for use in US UME programs. This initiative aligns with recommendations outlined by the Undergraduate Medical Education-Graduate Medical Education Review Committee and is part of a comprehensive effort to improve the transition to residency. The sponsors are committed to incorporating input from the community. The final discussion forum will be held December 6 at 3p ET or you can provide feedback online.

Applications Now Accepted for 2023 IAMSE Travel Awards

This Program support students or junior faculty to attend the IAMSE Annual Meeting. The amount of the 2023 Travel Awards will be up to $1,500, and are meant to cover expenses related to attendance at the IAMSE annual meeting in Cancun, such as conference registration, lodging, and airfare. Any IAMSE member who will attend the 2023 Annual Meeting is eligible to apply, though awards will only be granted to those with an accepted poster, oral or focus session abstract. Students are especially encouraged to apply. Please note that we have separate forms for faculty and students. Applications for faculty travel grants can be submitted here and the student applications can be submitted here. The deadline to submit is December 15, 2022.

    (OCTOBER 13, 2022) Sarah Schlein, M.D., associate professor of emergency medicine, is a lead investigator and co-author of research on the gender distribution of key leadership roles at the Wilderness Medical Society (WMS) published in WMS’s official journal, "Wilderness & Environmental Medicine" (WEM). The research was featured in an Elsevier article on PHYS.ORG.

This session will cover the nuts and bolts of pitching and writing opinion pieces for major media outlets including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Scientific American. Attendees will learn how to use opinion writing to promote public health and evidence-based public policy and will have an opportunity to practice pitching editors on op-ed ideas.
