Congratulations to the Freeman Lab for receiving an NIH grant for a project entitled ”Mechanisms of Endotheliopathy in SARS-CoV-2 Infection”. The funds are from NIH administered through a sub-OTA agreement, via University of Michigan.
Here’s an overview of the study >>>
“A severe and deadly complication of COVID-19 is a coagulopathy that involves damage to the endothelium. This project will utilize a pharmacological strategy featuring two polyanionic molecules, heparin and suramin – one anti-coagulant and the other without anti-coagulant effects – to dissect their efficacy in protecting endothelial cells during SARS-CoV-2 infection. Our overall goal is to establish the mechanisms by which heparin and/or suramin prevent endothelial injury and coagulopathy caused by SARS-CoV-2.”
