Academic and Clinical Excellence

The Department of Pediatrics at The Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at The University of Vermont, in conjunction with The University of Vermont Children's Hospital, strives to provide the highest quality pediatric care possible while maximizing our educational, research, and advocacy efforts in ways that will make a difference for the children and families we serve. We do this by forming unique and effective partnerships and programs with individuals and communities throughout Vermont, upstate New York, as well as in other parts of our country and the world all focused on improving equitable outcomes in child health.

Faculty and student

Education

Education is a cornerstone of our department and is evident in the key role we play in undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education of those interested in improving the health of children and families. Our department takes a leadership role in curriculum design and faculty development with faculty members helping to direct courses for medical students, as well as participate nationally in various education organizations and innovative projects to enhance educational offerings to residents and practicing pediatric clinicians. Education of the public is also a priority for our department through community programs as well as use of the media to promote children's health.

Pediatrics Faculty

Research

The research efforts of our faculty significantly contribute to the collective knowledge of pediatric health and illness, and access to clinical trials at UVM directly impacts the health of children in Vermont and upstate NY. Research efforts include basic and translational science, as well as clinical, quality improvement, and health services research. Members of the department also oversee or serve as local site leaders for several statewide, national, and international research projects and programs including the Vermont Child Health Improvement Program, the Vermont Oxford Network, Vermont Global Infectious Disease Research, ImproveCare Now, the IDeA States Pediatric Clinical Trials Network (ISPCTN), and the Children’s Oncology Group.

Patient Care

Patients throughout the state of Vermont and upstate New York utilize the clinical care offered at The University of Vermont Children's Hospital. Because of the close linkage between the hospital, the department and the communities we serve, faculty, residents and students take an active role in community outreach programs, educating and advocating for families throughout the region.

UVMCH Mission Statement on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

We recognize that we are enriched as a community and better able to serve children and families when we include voices from all perspectives.  We value a compassionate and collaborative work environment that promotes diversity, inclusiveness, and cultural humility of our faculty, staff, and trainees.  We are committed to advocacy initiatives that allow children and their families to thrive in safe environments free from bias and discrimination.  We will work to reduce barriers to health equity for all children and families.

  • Hands-On Learning: Medical Students Work with Patients Early in Curriculum
    September 1, 2024
Larner students work with real patients in the first year of medical school. In Doctoring in Vermont, a course that pairs students with physicians in the community, they provide direct patient care and practice history-taking and examination skills. First-year students also shadow nurses in the hospital, investigate social determinants of health, and do clinical work in community settings.
