Academic and Clinical Excellence

The Department of Pediatrics at the The Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at The University of Vermont, in conjunction with The University of Vermont Children's Hospital, strives to provide the highest quality pediatric care possible while maximizing our educational and research efforts in ways that will make a difference for the children and families we serve. We do this by forming unique and effective partnerships and programs with individuals and communities throughout Vermont, upstate New York, as well as in other parts of our country and the world all focused on improving outcomes in child health.

Education

Education is a cornerstone of our department and is evident in the key role we play in undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education of those interested in improving the health of children and families. Our department takes a leadership role in curriculum design and faculty development with faculty members helping to direct course for medical students, as well as participate nationally in various education organizations and innovative projects to enhance educational offerings to residents and practicing pediatric clinicians. Education of the public is also a priority for our department through community programs as well as use of the media to promote children's health.

Research

Research efforts focus on health outcomes, research in neonatology, general pediatrics and chronic diseases as well as translational and clinical research in oncology and many other specialty areas. Collaborative health services research occurs through programs such as the Vermont Child Health Improvement Program, the Vermont Oxford Network, the Pediatric Research in Office Settings Network and the ImproveCareNow, a new network focused on children and teens with inflammatory bowel disease.

Patient Care

Patients throughout the state of Vermont and upstate New York utilize the clinical care offered at The University of Vermont Children's Hospital. Because of the close linkage between the hospital, the department and the communities we serve, faculty, residents and students take an active role in community outreach programs, educating and advocating for families throughout the region.
