The Program
Graduate studies leading to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degree may be undertaken under several auspices in the Department of Pathology. Both M.S. and Ph.D degrees are awarded through the Cell Biology Program of the University, a multidisciplinary program which provides opportunities for advanced study and grants degrees in a number of UVM departments. A Master of Science degree program is offered by the Department of Pathology; in addition, if graduate work is done with a Pathology faculty member who holds an appointment jointly with another department, the degree may be granted by that department. As the major route through which degrees are granted in the Pathology Department, the Cell Biology Program deserves some discussion. Students in Cell Biology at UVM have access to graduate courses offered by the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Agriculture, College of Engineering and Mathematics, and the College of Medicine. These courses include "state-of-the-art" lectures and laboratories in cellular and molecular biology, anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, and pathology. All basic science departments in the University have seminar programs, and the Cell Biology Program offers a weekly scientific conference. The Department of Pathology offers a seminar series as well. There are currently 49 students in Cell Biology, the majority of whom are candidates for the Ph.D. degree. Students assume an active role in running the weekly seminar series and interviewing prospective applicants for the program. A student is elected yearly to serve on the Steering Committee of Cell Biology, which consists of five selected faculty members and the student representative.
