Research

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Research Program supports the common vision of Fletcher Allen Health Care and the UVM College of Medicine: teaching, research and medical service are inseparable. This common vision is what makes an Academic Medical Center unique and a leader in medical care delivery. With this vision, the Department seeks to create and maintain an environment that respects individuals, accepts change as a basic premise, values teamwork, and demands a commitment to academic excellence.

Specifically, our research mission will be focused on:

  • The practice of pathology and the enhancement of our understanding of pathologic mechanisms of disease. Clinical research will be driven by the clinical interests of the faculty with active collaboration, where appropriate, with the basic science programs. We will work within FAHC and UVM to create institutional support for productive clinical and basic research.

  • Cardiovascular Molecular Epidemiology and Environmental Pathology. The highly competitive level of science nationally and the restricted level of science funding make focused collaborative efforts necessary. We will therefore focus our Basic Science programs and invest departmental resources in these two core areas in order to maximize the impact of our programs and ensure continued success.

  • Creating an environment which nurtures and supports young investigators, so that they may have the opportunity to develop into either independent research investigators or, in the case of more clinically oriented faculty and residents, investigative collaborators, capable of adding significantly to the scientific literature and meriting extra- and/or intramural resources.

Science and Health: A Discovery Day for Girls

Maureen Harmon, M.D., teaches seventh and eighth grade girls about organ systems with a hands-on demonstration in the Fletcher Allen morgue during "Science and Health: A Discovery Day for Girls," a day-long seminar coordinated by the UVM College of Medicine's "Women's Mentoring Project."
