LARNER COLLEGE OF MEDICINE POLICY OF THE WEEK

Policy 560.10 - Qualitative Standards: Satisfactory Academic Progress

1. The qualitative standards for academic progress are detailed in the Review of Academic Performance and Review of Professional Performance policies, and each student's progress is reviewed at least once each academic year by the Committee on Advancement.
   Students must pass each segment of the curriculum to the satisfaction of the Committee on Advancement before advancing to the next segment, and must complete all requirements of the curriculum to the satisfaction of the Committee in order to graduate.
2. Students must maintain academic standing consistent with the Larner College of Medicine's graduation requirements. Students are considered to have academic standing consistent with the College's graduation requirements if they are progressing through the curriculum to the satisfaction of the Committee on Advancement.
3. As outlined in the Review of Academic and Professional Performance Policies, students who fail any course, clerkship, or advanced rotation may, with the permission of the Committee on Advancement, make arrangements to remove those deficiencies or repeat the courses, clerkships, or advanced rotations. A student removing deficiencies or repeating the work of Foundations or one or more clerkships or advanced rotations with the approval of the Committee on Advancement is considered to have an academic standing consistent with the College's standards for graduation and, therefore, to be making Satisfactory Academic Progress, provided s/he continues to meet the Quantitative Standards.
4. Students who fail to meet the qualitative standards are dismissed from the Larner College of Medicine.

Class of 2017

• APPROACHING DEADLINE - The Rank Order List Certification Deadline: The Rank Order List certification deadline is 9 pm EST on February 22, 2017. Please do not wait until the last couple of hours to certify, and remember, if you make changes you must re-certify! If you don't certify, your list won't go into the Match. The NRMP is unforgiving. We encourage you to meet with your specialty advisor to go over you Rank Order List before final certification. Information on the ranking process, including tips and Frequently Asked Questions is available on the web. • Official Registration is Now Open for the Larner College of Medicine Class of 2017 Dinner (evening before Match Day!) hosted by the UVM Medical Alumni Association: The UVM Medical Alumni Association invites you and one guest to attend the Class of 2017 Dinner. The dinner is scheduled for Thursday, March 16, 2017 (the night before Match Day!) at UVM's Davis Student Center, 4th floor Grand Maple Ballroom. The evening will begin at 6:00 p.m. with a reception, followed by a seated dinner and program. Register to attend today! • Scholarship Opportunities: Two scholarship opportunities are available for current fourth-year students.   • The Mark Beers, MD '82 Award: A $6,000 award for a student who has or has had a medical condition that influenced his or her decision to become a physician.
  • The David Tormey, MD Award: A $6,000 award for accomplishment in the face of adversity during medical school.
• Call for UVMMC Lockers (Baird) & Pagers: The Office of Medical Student Education will be welcoming students from the Class of 2019 into the Clerkship year, and we will be providing them with pagers and UVMMC lockers. Please review your rotation schedule from now through April and let Jacqueline Drouin know if you will no longer need your pager or locker; please turn them in as soon as possible. Many thanks for your time and consideration!
• Please Take A few Moments to assess your Musculoskeletal Knowledge: Dr. McCarthy needs your help to assess your musculoskeletal knowledge! In case you didn’t know, musculoskeletal injuries are the second most common reason patients seek medical attention. There is a multiple-choice exam on COMET (https://comet.med.uvm.edu; Password: themsk17) under “Assessment of Musculoskeletal Knowledge.” It should take about 10-15 minutes to complete. This research will help you see where your knowledge lies, and will help us to refine the musculoskeletal curriculum at UVM to benefit future classes. Thank you! • DEADLINE THIS WEEK - UC Irvine Urology Fellowship opportunity for MS3s and MS4s: The Department of Urology at UC Irvine would like to announce an excellent research opportunity for medical students interested in urology. We are accepting applications to The Joseph & Carol Reich Leadership and Innovation Fellowship Training (LIFT) Program in Urology for the 2017-2018 academic year. • APPROACHING DEADLINE - Clinical Research Position in Orthopedics at MGH for 3rd Year Students: Dr. Scott D. Martin is currently inviting 3rd year medical students to apply for a Clinical Research Fellowship in Orthopedic Sports Medicine and Joint Reconstruction at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), a Harvard teaching hospital. This fellowship is awarded to a rising fourth-year medical student who has demonstrated a keen interest in orthopedics and is a competitive future candidate for a residency in orthopedic surgery. Application deadline is February 22, 2017, but it is highly recommended to submit your application as soon as possible as applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. • Visiting Clerkship Program-University of Rochester: The University of Rochester Medical Center has three funded visiting clerkship positions available from August through November of 2017 for select applicants from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine (URM) or who have a demonstrated vision and commitment to improving the health status of diverse patient populations via patient care, research and/or teaching. • Medical Management and Leadership: I am the Course Director for Medical Management and Leadership. I am writing to notify your class that I have increased the maximum enrollment from 8 to 12 each month.  Also, there will be periodic participation from medical students from other institutions, including Michigan State University, New York Medical College, the University of Colorado, and the University of North Dakota.  If you have a peer at another medical institution who might be interested in participating, please feel free to forward the curriculum (revamped for the Class of 2018) or put them in to contact with me, Mitchell Tsai, MD, MMM, Associate Professor.  I will figure out the administrative paperwork (this is management).
• Joseph Collins Foundation (JCF) Scholarship Opportunity: Senior students (co2019 and co2018) interested in the arts outside of the field of medicine are invited to apply to OMSE for this $15,000 outside scholarship. The Larner College of Medicine Associate Dean for Students is permitted to nominate one student to the JCF from the 2019 and 2018 class. If you wish to be considered for this nomination, please email StudentCOMServices@med.uvm.edu your CV as well as a brief statement outlining your interests/passions in the arts (including but not limited to literature, music, opera, painting, dance, sculpture, etc.) and your current specialty interest(s) in medicine. Deadline for submission to OMSE is by 4:00 pm on February 24, 2017; the two nominated students will then have extra steps to complete for the JCF application in time for the March 01 deadline. This scholarship requires financial need. Examples of financial need primarily include filing a FAFSA with a low EFC resulting, and needing to utilize federal education loan programs. • Medical Education Fellowship for Medical Students - University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine: Now in its fourth year, the University Of Miami Miller School Of Medicine is continuing to offer a one year medical education fellowship to a medical student after completion of year 2 of the traditional MD curriculum. Through our Educational Development Office, this fellow will work primarily on our 'Cane Academy initiative, working directly with our senior instructional designer and other members of the medical education administration. The 'Cane Academy initiative assists in creating a competency-based, self-directed curriculum that leverages educational technology including but not limited to online modules with short videos, self-assessment questions, and in class problem solving sessions leading to formative and summative assessments. This fellow must already have expertise in instructional technology resources to assist in growing the initiative and will work collaboratively with faculty and the senior instructional designer on technological solutions for blended learning. A graduate student stipend for the year will be provided along with support for travel to medical education conferences. Nickens Medical Student Scholarships: These awards consist of five scholarships given to outstanding students entering their third year of medical school who have shown leadership in efforts to eliminate inequities in medical education and health care and have demonstrated leadership efforts in addressing educational, societal, and health care needs of racial and ethnic minorities in the United States. A medical school may nominate one student per year for this award. Read more about this opportunity at the Herbert W. Nickens Medical Student Scholarship webpage. If you believe you would be a good candidate for this award, please send the following to the Office of Medical Student Education no later than February 21, 2016 (submissions will be reviewed and a nominee selected on March 1, 2016):
  • A letter of recommendation from a faculty member.
  • A personal statement by the nominee, which does not exceed two double space pages, assessing their leadership efforts in eliminating inequities in medical education and health care for racial and ethnic minorities.
  • A curriculum vitae (CV) for the nominee, which clearly highlight awards and scholarships, and includes contact information.
• Freeman Foundation Legacy Scholarship Opportunity: The Larner College of Medicine is pleased to announce that applications are being accepted for the Freeman Foundation Legacy Medical Scholarship for at least four members of the Class of 2019 to be awarded at least $5,000 in the current 2016-2017 academic year (amount may vary based on number of applicants). Applicants should have a passion for, and commitment to, meeting the health care needs of Vermonters post-residency. The deadline to apply is Monday, March 27th, 2017. Questions about the scholarship or commitment letter should be directed to Melissa Liebig.

• DEADLINE THIS WEEK - Summer 2017 Internships with Physicians for a National Health Program: The Vermont Chapter of Physicians for a National Health Program is offering two, five-week summer internships for current first-year medical students.  The internships include an educational component, outreach, and an independent project of the intern’s choosing. Read about the program on the job description document (includes instructions on how to apply and contact information). The application deadline is February 15, 2017.
• Gold Foundation Student Summer Fellowship program: The Student Summer Fellowship program offers opportunities for medical students to complete a research or service project related to community health. The grant award includes a stipend of up to $4,000 for a 10-week period. Applications are due March 20, 2017.
• AHEC & MedQuest Summer 2017 Opportunities Drop-ins: Did you miss the Summer 2017 Opportunities Meeting? DROP IN! February 21st, in Med Ed 201, from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM. MEDQUEST Mentors are needed for campus-based health careers exploration sessions for Vermont high schoolers; sessions are four to six days in length in Burlington and around the state. AHEC SUMMER PROJECTS Participate in inter-professional, community-based service-learning opportunities in Vermont; 100 hours over two to four weeks. ALL OPPORTUNITIES INCLUDE A STIPEND. • Summer Opportunity - Jeanne Spurlock Minority Medical Student Research Fellowships in Substance Abuse and Addiction: Supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (award availability contingent upon funding from sponsor), the Jeanne Spurlock Minority Medical Student Research Fellowship provides up to $4,000 for 8-12 weeks of research training in substance abuse and addiction under a mentor with extensive experience in the type of research that is being proposed, and whose work includes children and adolescents participants. This program also provides additional travel for required attendance to AACAP's 64th Annual Meeting in Washington DC in October 2017. Applications are considered from African-American, Native American, Alaskan Native, Mexican American, Hispanic, Asian, and Pacific Islander students in accredited U.S. medical schools or students whose research will focus on minorities. The application deadline is March 03, 2017.
• Summer Opportunity - Summer Medical Student Fellowships in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: Supported by AACAP's Campaign for America's Kids (CFAK), The Summer Medical Student Fellowship provides up to $3,500 for 12 weeks of clinical or research training under a child and adolescent psychiatrist mentor. This program also provides additional travel funds for the required attendance of award recipients to the 64th AACAP Annual Meeting in Washington DC in October 2017. Anxiety & Stress Management Group Therapy for Medical Students

Vermont Psychological Services (formerly the Behavior Therapy & Psychotherapy Center at UVM) is offering an anxiety skills group for anxiety and stress management. This group is offered specifically for medical students. These weekday evening sessions will be led by two psychology Ph.D. candidates, Kelsey Hudson and Jonah Meyerhoff. They will be teaching skills useful for medical students preparing for Step 1, although senior students are also welcome. To participate in this group, contact Vermont Psychological Services at (802) 656-2661, or submit your name and contact information on our website. When contacting the clinic, leave a message regarding interest in the group and we will call you back in a timely manner to provide information. You can also reach out to Dr. Rosen if you have questions about the group. There will be 4-6 sessions total.

THIS WEEK - Marathon Training and Winter Running

Monday, February 13th, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM, in the Sullivan Classroom (Med Ed 200). Interested in running the Vermont City Marathon? The Marathon SIG will be hosting a lunchtime talk about marathon training on Monday, February 13th! A running coach will be coming in to share his tips for increasing mileage and training for the marathon. We will also have a speaker from Fleet Feet who will discuss the best ways to run in the winter. The event will take place in Med Ed 200 from 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM, and lunch will be provided! From Symptoms to Sequencing

Genomics and the Future of Patient Centered Care: The Pathology Interest Group (PIG) would like to invite you to a lunchtime case review session with Dr. Debra Leonard and Dr. Nikoletta Sidiropoulos on Friday, February 24, in Med Ed 204, from 12:00 - 1:00 PM. The cases presented will follow from clinical presentation through the pathologist’s office where genomic testing guided treatment and prognosis. Kenneth and Bessie Ladeau Trust Scholarship Opportunity

Kenneth and Bessie Ladeau Trust Scholarship is to aid in-state ("Vermont resident") medical students preferably interested in cardiology or oncology, and have demonstrated financial need. If no Vermont residents apply, the trustees may consider New Hampshire residents. The deadline to apply is April 30, 2017. Please review the scholarship announcement for further details. NEGEA Student and Resident Travel Stipends

NEGEA Student Travel Stipends support students to attend the Annual NEGEA Conference. The amount of 2017 travel stipends is $400, which is meant to (partially) cover expenses related to attendance at the Annual NEGEA Conference, such as registration fee, travel, and lodging.  Up to 10 travel stipends will be awarded.

Any student or resident currently within an NEGEA-affiliated institution who will attend the 2017 NEGEA Education Retreat is eligible to apply for a travel stipend. Awards will be considered for those with accepted abstracts and who will serve as the primary presenter of their work. Stepping Forward Together: Advancing Equity and Cultural Competency to Improve Population Health

March 27 - March 28, 2017, at the Sheraton Burlington Hotel.  Join us for this timely and essential two day discussion about health care equity and the promotion of population health for Vermonters. The two days will be filled with national, regional and local experts sharing their knowledge and experiences about health care, diversity, culture and how to best support the health of Vermonters. Dr. Camara Phyllis Jones, M.D., M.P.H., Ph.D., a world renowned expert on the social determinants of health and the promotion of equity in health care, is starting off our event with a keynote and discussion. On the second day, Tawara Goode, M.A., Director National Center for Cultural Competence & University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities at the Georgetown University Medical Center will provide a keynote exploring the development and implementation of programs and initiatives in the area of cultural and linguistic competency at local, national and international levels. HealthCare Leadership School

3rd annual Northeast Medical Student Queer Alliance Summit

On March 4th, Fenway Health (the LGBTQ health center in Boston) will be hosting the 3rd annual Northeast Medical Student Queer Alliance Summit! This is an opportunity for medical students across the northeast to collaborate to promote LGBTQ education, research and community at their respective institutions. There will also be a networking dinner the evening before, for students and residents interested in careers in LGBTQ health. Please feel free to review/print/share the event flyer! National MS Society" MS Clinical Mentorship Program 2017

The National MS Society offers a four-week MS clinical mentorship program to students who have completed at least one year of medical school. The experience will expose students to the diagnosis and comprehensive management of MS under the tutelage of MS experts. Goals are to raise awareness of the challenges experienced by people with MS and to generate interest in a career in MS care. Applications are due by February 17.

The Village at Autumn Pond is now accepting applications for May 1st and June 1st! We have two new buildings that will be opening then.
