UVM Larner College of Medicine students gain clinical experience at a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings and locations.

Students based at the Vermont Campus will enter a clinical lottery for the discipline- specific rotations. The Vermont Campus locations range from college towns to rural settings, both in Vermont and northern New York.

Vermont and New York Clinical sites 

The University of Vermont Health Network serves Vermont and northern New York through six hospital locations: The University of Vermont Medical Center, Alice Hyde Medical Center, Central Vermont Medical Center, Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital, Elizabethtown Community Hospital and Porter Medical Center,  

The University of Vermont Medical Center, an academic medical center, is a regional resource and referral center for Vermont and northeastern New York that logs more than one million patient visits each year. The University of Vermont Medical Center comprises a tertiary-level referral medical center hospital, a large multi-specialty outpatient clinic, and 22 satellite facilities including primary care locations.

Traditional clerkship rotations include Surgery, Inpatient Medicine, Ambulatory Medicine, Family Medicine, Neurology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Obstetrics/Gynecology.

Connecticut Campus Clinical Sites

 

Nuvance HealthStudents based at the Connecticut Campus will complete most clerkships at the Western Connecticut Health Network’s Danbury and Norwalk locations.

 
  • Danbury Hospital is a 371-bed regional medical center and university teaching hospital located in Danbury, CT. Danbury provides centers of excellence in cardiovascular services, cancer, weight loss surgery, orthopedic and spine care, digestive disorders and radiology. Clerkship rotations include Surgery, Inpatient Medicine, Ambulatory Medicine, Family Medicine, Neurology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Obstetrics/Gynecology.  
  • Norwalk Hospital is a 328-bed, not-for-profit, acute care community teaching hospital that serves a population of 250,000 in lower Fairfield County, Connecticut. Norwalk has more than 500 physicians on active medical staff, many of whom trained at the nation's leading medical schools and hospitals, and 2,000 dedicated health professionals and support personnel. The hospital has a wide range of clinical programs anchored by six signature services: Cancer, Cardiovascular, Digestive Diseases, Emergency Care, Orthopedics/Neurospine, and Women's and Children's Services.

 

Global Health ProgramGlobal Health

The Connecticut campus hosts the Global Health Program partnership. This program provides an excellent opportunity to deepen students' real-world experience working with diverse populations.

Fourth-year students may choose to apply to an elective Advanced Integration experience in one of our five locations: Dominican Republic, Russia, Uganda, Vietnam or Zimbabwe. First-year students at either the Vermont or Connecticut campus may apply for a summer Global Health elective between their first and second year of medical school. 

The program offers close engagement in the cultural and educational exchange that characterizes global health. Electives are entirely subsidized, and participants are chosen through an interview process.

How it works:

All students are based in Burlington, Vermont, for the 18-month Vermont Integrated Curriculum, Level 1 – Foundations section. 

Students select either Vermont Campus or Connecticut Campus as their base for Level 2 – Clinical Clerkships and Level 3 -  Advanced Integration. Students are mentored by Larner faculty members at all clinical locations and are provided opportunities for building professional, collegial communities.

The clinical clerkship year is designed to build on competencies acquired in Level 1 - Foundations to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for clinical care and decision-making in a variety of medical settings. The Vermont Campus and the Connecticut Campus are the two locations where students complete their clerkship education. 

Both campus environments blend the best of traditional academic medical centers with community health care. The year is composed of multiple clerkships which provide clinical experiences supported by structured educational programs.  All clerkships will be completed under the supervision of Larner College of Medicine faculty. 

The Advanced Integration level encompasses activities that enhance the student’s clinical skills and knowledge of basic and clinical science, and elective activities that allow the student to shape their own professional development.
