It is our belief that through teaching the integration of the physical, emotional and intellectual aspects of health, physicians and other health care providers can better serve both individuals and the community. Therefore, the MBMC offers educational opportunities for the residents in psychiatry, medical students, nursing students and graduate students in psychology.
Educational opportunities offered are dependent on the specific student programs within the Graduate College and College of Medicine. Typically, residents in psychiatry participate in the outpatient 11-week mind-body medicine rotation, medical students participate in a 4-week clinical or research elective, and psychology graduate students enroll in a one-year practicum placement.
Clinical Education includes: learning individual evaluation techniques, consultations and treatments for patients with problems adjusting to chronic illness, such as chronic pain, obesity or hypertension, among others. Students have an opportunity to observe or co-facilitate the 11-week group cognitive behavioral therapy for chronic pain patients. There is an opportunity to learn relaxation techniques, cognitive restructuring and other behavioral coping skills.
Research Education includes: learning to design and conduct randomized controlled studies utilizing behavioral medicine interventions and the relapse prevention of health-related conditions. In addition, our exploratory research utilizing fMRI seeks to identify the neurobiological mechanisms of CBT for chronic pain. Our goal is to explore not only the neural mechanism through which this process occurs but also attempts to create a new paradigm to predict which patients would benefit from psychotherapeutic intervention. Students take part in research interviewing, training, data analyses and publication.
