Todd A. Maugans, M.D.
Dr. Maugans is Assistant Professor of Surgery (Neurosurgery),
Pediatrics and Family Practice at the University of Vermont College of
Medicine in Burlington. He serves as Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at
Fletcher Allen Health Care.
Dr. Maugans joined the faculty at the University of Vermont in September of
2000. He completed in neurosurgical training at the University of Virginia
and Dartmouth. He obtained subspecialty training in pediatric neurosurgery
at the Children's Hospital Los Angeles under the direction of J. Gordon
McComb, M.D. Prior to his arrival of Vermont, Dr. Maugans practiced
pediatric neurosurgery in northern California.
In addition to his neurosurgical career, Dr. Maugans is a board certified
Family Physician. He completed this training at the University of Vermont
College of Medicine and has developed a strong alliance with the primary
care community in northern New England. He prides himself in developing
meaningful relationships and communications with patients, their family
members, and their primary care physicians.
Dr. Maugans is well versed in all aspects of pediatric neurosurgical
practice, including the management of hydrocephalus; congenital
malformations of the skull, brain and spinal cord; brain and spinal cord
tumors, and pediatric brain and spinal cord injury. Dr. Maugans is
presently pursuing investigations into the development of improved
cerebrospinal fluid shunting systems. He is also studying the mechanisms
for and prevention of ventricular catheter blockage (the primary cause of
shunt malfunctions). He serves as a Board Member for Vermont Safe Kids and
Vermont Think First injury prevention programs. He is a member of the
Children's Oncology Group, and is listed as a Pediatric Neurosurgeon in the
resource directory of the Hydrocephalus Association.
