The Founder of Madi's Fund Debra Jaurigue
(Updated August 2009)
It has been 11 years since
Madi’s Fund held our first fundraiser and started reaching out to
local families and communities, in an effort to educate and support the
needs surrounding the lives of children and adults affected by
hydrocephalus. This journey has had many highs and many lows
along the way.
Fortunately, the highs have
outweighed the lows – the many friendships, networking and
knowledge that have been acquired from reaching out to these people,
the medical community and all interested parties; the laughs, smiles,
strength and spirit shown by our loved ones who have endured shunt
revisions; and the many experiences along the way have made me realize
how fortunate a person I am to be traveling along this road with my two
daughters – Tamra & Madi. I have learned that
“People, friendship and relationships are what are important in
life, as well as, our health.”
For these reasons, Madi’s Fund
remains committed to our mission and will continue to reach out to
families and individuals who need assistance, understanding and courage
in navigating the challenges of hydrocephalus. By working
together, we can make this a better place for everyone living with
Hydrocephalus!
Fondly,
Debra Poplawski-Jaurigue

& Director
Why was Madi's Fund Started?
"It was my belief that there was a need to raise money for scientific
research into the causes and treatments of hydrocephalus, and also, to help
families with additional costs of having your child hospitalized. Since the
birth of Madi's Fund in 1998, I have come to realize that other neuorsurgical
conditions and disabilities affect our children's hydrocephalus, therefore,
our mission has been expanded to include Spina Bifida, Myelomeningocele,
Syringomyelia, Brain Injury and Brain Tumors."
While Madison was hospitalized for her 14 shunt revisions, we were fortunate
to have many family, friends and medical people there to support and guide us
through very difficult decisions and moments. Madi's Fund is my way of
thanking the medical community and all people who dedicate their work to
helping children and their families deal with special health needs."

Debra says, "Madi's Fund has enabled us to meet many people who are affected
by hydrocephalus and who have dedicated their lives to the medical
profession. We have been fortunate to have built great friendships and
relationships with these people. All of whom have enhanced our lives in one
way or another: given us encouragement and strength to handle the challenges
of hydrocephalus; shown us how very special our children are and what is
important in life or given us a shoulder to lean on or cry on. But most of
all, these people have taught me that 'We are not alone. Together, we can
get through any challenges." For this, I am thankful.
