Community Service

Serving our world is a vitally important mission of the UVM Larner College of Medicine. Many of our programs are national and global models of excellence. The College is also a key partner with state leaders in finding solutions for issues that affect patients, populations and policy.

A Community Curriculum 

In addition to providing a solid foundation in basic health science knowledge and clinical skills, the Vermont Integrated Curriculum (VIC) integrates programs in leadership skills, professional development, research, and teaching skills.

Public Health Projects is a required course where students are mentored by both College of Medicine faculty and community agency staff. Students apply the principles and science of public health while working to improve the health of the community.

Everyone Gets Involved 

Faculty, staff, students, and alumni participate in community projects. Students are integral community members right from the start, with community engagement ranging from assisting with Vermont refugee resettlement initiatives to serving as mentors for the high school MedQuest program run by Vermont Area Health Education Centers (AHEC).

Global Health Program 

Our faculty, residents, and students participate in global health initiatives through programs around the world in the Larner College of Medicine’s Global Health Program. A partnership in affiliation with Nuvance Health, the program focuses on improving patient care and medical education through cooperation and the exchange of ideas.

Community-Focused Alumni 

Community engagement doesn’t stop at graduation, and the Service to Medicine and Community Award is presented to alumni in recognition of their outstanding record of community service not directly related to medical practice. We are proud of our alumni who play such critical roles in our community.
