Class of 2017 Students Celebrate Humanism in Medicine

University of Vermont medical students, residents and faculty gathered March 22, 2018 to celebrate the Class of 2017’s completion of the Clerkship level of the Vermont Integrated Curriculum, induct new student members into the Gold Humanism Honor Society, and formally recognize their mentors through the presentation of the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award.

University of Vermont medical students, residents and faculty gathered March 22, 2018 to celebrate the Class of 2017’s completion of the Clerkship level of the Vermont Integrated Curriculum, induct new student members into the Gold Humanism Honor Society, and formally recognize their mentors through the presentation of the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award. The evening event took place at the Davis Auditorium in the Robert Larner, M.D. Medical Education Center.

Following opening remarks from William Jeffries, Ph.D., senior associate dean for medical education, and Christa Zehle, M.D., associate dean for students, Tania Bertsch, M.D., associate dean for clinical education and faculty mentor for the UVM chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS), inducted new members from the Class of 2017 into the GHHS. The inductees were: Hillary Anderson; Eric Bennett; Meghan Breen; Mustafa Chopan; Elizabeth Cochrane; Alissa Correll; Justin Genziano; Dylan Herschkowitz; Amy Hopkins; Sarah King; Danielle Leahy; Christina Litsakos; Chi An Liu; Mohammad Mertaban; Kiyon Naser-Tavakolian; Ryan Nichols; I-Hsiang Shu; George Taylor; and Asaad Traina. Each inductee received a certificate and GHHS lapel pin.

Bertsch, Zehle and Jeffries were joined by Mark Levine, M.D., UVM associate dean for graduate medical education and professor of medicine, to present the 2016 UVM College of Medicine Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Awards. More than 175 residents across the UVM College of Medicine’s four clinical training sites were nominated for this prestigious recognition. Class of 2017 medical students Bryce Bludevich, Katherine Lantz, Jessica Huang, Sarah Kelso, Amy Hopkins, Brian Till, Margot Seybolt, Sasha Taylor, Ryan Nichols and Andy Liu presented remarks about the nominees.

Honorees, who were selected based on votes from members of the Class of 2017, included:

  • Katie Adams, M.D.’13, resident in family medicine, Eastern Maine Medical Center;
  • Alfred Croteau, M.D., resident in surgery, UVM Medical Center;
  • Karen Lewicki, M.D., resident in psychiatry, UVM Medical Center;
  • Erin Lips, M.D., resident in obstetrics and gynecology, UVM Medical Center;
  • Gatha Nair, M.D., resident in medicine, UVM Medical Center;
  • Charles Parsons, M.D.'09, resident in surgery, UVM Medical Center;
  • David Reisman, M.D.’14, resident in family medicine, UVM Medical Center; and
  • Adrian Salinas, M.D., resident in obstetrics and gynecology, Danbury Hospital

After the final award, Bertsch led the new GHHS inductees in reading The Oath, Jeffries delivered short closing remarks, and participants attended a reception in the College’s Larner Classroom.
